your numbers will get you at least strongly considered. just get excellent recs and write an original personal statement.

but also remember that in elite college admissions, there are no sure things.

think carefully about whetheryou want to keep playing music in college- if you do, advertise it, contact the conductor, and use it to help sell yourself. however i realized i was sick of band and i am now pretty undecided about playing for amherst officially, and i didnt contact the conductor. also consider applying early.

amherst 09, btw

I would also hype up the philosophy interest. It's the most unusual part of your application.

unusual? i had a philosophy interest as well. i dont think its that unusual for kids applying to liberal arts schools - not that he shouldnt play it up.

just curious, what do people do in Philosophy Club?

stroke their beards and talk revolution?

are you implying that the Philosophy Club is exclusive to men? hahah. now im really curious, what goes on in those meetings!

Work the fact that you STARTED the Philosophy Club into your essays. It shows initiative, leadership, and an ability to follow through on your interests. You take action. Your stats are fine - but getting in is a crap shoot. You need to make yourself standout from everyone else that has similar stats. Show them that you are a self-starter. Amherst is also big on diversity - that doesn't necessarily mean minority, but can be geographic location or economically depressed. Where you are from may help you. Just make sure your essays are good, and from the heart. My D wrote about her love of roller coasters, and got an early write. When the Prez called, he mentioned that there were good roller coasters not too far away. So your essays need to let them know who you really are - not just some learned paragraph, but allows them to see who you really are inside.

"are you implying that the Philosophy Club is exclusive to men? hahah. now im really curious, what goes on in those meetings!"

hmmmm, that's interesting.
hadn't thought about the women deprived of beards. this certainly is discriminating :(

As said above, your stats will give you strong consideration, but very few get into Amherst on grades alone, from what I've seen. Whichever extracurricular you plan to write about, you MUST emphasize your dedication to it, mainly to show that, if accepted, you will continue and be a contribution to the community.
