I'm a 17 year-old italian living in Naples. I have lived 5 years ( aged 9-14) in Sheffield ( U.K) and have just finished my senior year of the International School of Naples. ( graduated Salutatorian ). I am, well was, president of my high school during the senior year and secretary during my junior year. My extracurricular activities include guitar ( 3 years) and soccer. I have volunteer and work experience, for i have worked in the Pascale hospital of Naples( one month in August) and have organized various fundarisers etc. All of my grades are above 90%. I have teacher recommendations and several connections to universities such as Columbia and Virgina as a result of my dad's job ( thoracic surgeon).
My SAT scores however are letting me down. I have a 660 in critical reading, 690 in writing and 600 in maths for a total of 1950. ( I have taken the test three times) I still have to take my subject tests, which will be spanish, french and biology. This year I'm going to an italian high school in order to undertake what is commonly known here as the " 13th year"..though i am not obligated to do so, i find that the whole experience will improve my curriculum and overall culture. ( We take such classes as philosophy and astronomy) Furthermore, i graduated early from the International School of Naples early at the age of 16.

To summarize, by the end of the year i will have two diplomas: an American one ( Internation School of Naples) and an European one ( from this high school) which would allow me to attend any college in the world - England, Italy included-.

Accolades include Honor Roll for 4 years; prizes in English, Geography, Biology, Art History, Modern History, Italian, Music etc. Participated in several writing contests and i might have a diploma for Spanish ( DELE nivel inicial) - results come in February-.
Bearing in mind that i still have to do my subject tests and that i can retake the SAT, my questions are the following. How high should aim for? I realize that many things must be taken into consideration; however, based on what you know, could you please give me your personal opinion?

thank you

PS. Please take in account that i may have forgotten some things

How high do you think your SAT scores can go? What do you want to study? Which part of America do you want to study? Do you need financial aid (looks like you probably do not)?

My SAT? Higher than 2000..that's for sure... to be honest i took the test twice before i actually sat down and studied for it ( i know...i know..i'm an idiot)

Next question: i want to follow in my father's footsteps..medicine.

I don't think that i need financial aid ( even though i'm not rolling in money)

PS. So..what should i aim for? If i get very good gradas on my SAT II do i have any sort of a shot for such institutions as Brown or Cornell?
Be honest...cheers

Your SAT's competitive, I would not take it more than three times - it makes you look like some kind of score obsessive maniac. But at the same time, for med school - you'd better raise the math section buddy. Your SAT II's should be all 700's, then you have a shot :)

Football apart, getting that SAT score as close to 2100 possible should be your aim - go for it! That way, even though you would still be in the mid-range for most Ivies and such, you would still be in a great position to apply to slightly less selective yet extremely well-regarded schools (William and Mary, even Virginia).

your scores are well below the median at brown and cornell so you have to consider them reaches and to be honest, unlikely with current scores. However, you never know. I don't know if they get many applicants from Italy and what the quality of the students applying will be. And since english is not your first language they may look at your CR and writing scores in that context. So it's worth applying but if you really want to go to school in the States you need to also apply to schools where your scores are at median or higher.

But if i take the SAT I again ( ok it would be my fourth time but i heard that students can take them as many times as they wish) and get good grades on the SATII's will i have a shot or would it still look pretty damn hard?

Ok..so if all else fails do you think that i could get into such colleges as Virginia? Any others? thanks

^Simply not true. UC's are all under 5% from OOS, much less international and with their budget crisis will have to serve fewer students, so OOS will be increasingly harder.
