I am an international applicant who got into ucsd today. I had applied to mechanical engineering but did not get in. Instead i got into undeclared major. Is it possible to apply for an open category open major now.

Also how hard is it to transfer frm undeclared to engineering once in ucsd ..

Mech engineering is one of the impacted engineerings majors at UCSD along with aerospace, computer engi, computer sci, bioengi, and bioengi: biotech. This means that you would need to get approved by the department to get into the major. You need to do relatively decent applicant to be admitted for a major change because it is a competitive process ( not sure about the numbers though. It is competitive in the sense that they are picking only a handful of students who submit an application to them)

@archaic
Once you get accepted into the Biology Department. You are free to switch to any of the impacted Bio majors.

However, if for some reason you decide to leave the impacted bio major for something else, then decide you want to be a bio major again, you have to reapply for the Biology Department and chances become slim.

@archaic You can leave the bio department for another major once and get back in without reapplying, so long as you are in good academic standing.

You need to contact the CSE department and ask them about their application process for current student who wish to switch. In most cases it will require that you attend UCSD for a year before you can apply to switch.

Once you have registered for Fall courses, you will be considered a registered student. That’s when you can actually begin to change your major. Major changes can be done on-line.

Majors with impacted status at Jacobs School of Engineering:
Aerospace Engineering
Bioengineering
Bioengineering:Biotechnology
Mechanical Engineering
Computer Engineering
Computer Science

All other engineering majors are considered open major.
