I applied to Stanford and Duke as an engineering major. If I get accepted to either of these, can I change to a non-engineering major? I am not really planning this right now, but I am just wondering since I am pre-med and could possibly go chemistry or biology.

I’m not really certain about this, but it might be a little tricky at Duke since you are admitted to either Trinity or Pratt and not just Duke in general. It might be able to be done, but it’d probably be a little difficult because you’d have an acceptance letter from Pratt and be asking to exchange it for one from Trinity.

As far as Stanford, I have no idea.

You are admitted to Stanford University not to any particular college. Good luck.

As stated above, extremely easy to change majors. You don’t actually have to declare your major until the end of soph year. TBH, there are no limitations at stanford outside of getting all the courses for each major done

My S was accepted last year to Duke. This school was high on his list and he never considered engineering prior to the application process, so he was accepted into Trinity. Afterwards, he began to comtemplate majoring in engineering and was told its not hard to switch to Pratt. I believe you have to take calculus and get a B or better to be considered for the engineering school. As a matter of fact, a lot of people make this change once in Duke because its easier to get accepted into Trinity than Pratt.

What procedures do you have to go through if you want to change majors?

At Stanford, it’s usually as simple as dropping your current major on Axess and adding your new one. Some departments want you to come in and talk to an adviser (to make sure you know what the major entails, etc.), and some require you to get your student file from your previous department and deliver it to your new department (although most don’t bother with this, I think). No major at Stanford is selective, and as long as a given school grants undergrad degrees, you can switch in and out of it at will.

What is Axess? Will it go on a permanent record or be held against you if you switch majors?

Axess is the online portal for all the things you’d need to do at Stanford - adding/dropping classes, paying your bill, viewing financial aid, getting your transcript, etc. There’s no record of your previously-declared majors, so it’s not held against you.
