Change major from Krieger to Whiting

Is it hard to transfer from Krieger to a Whiting major? Is Whiting selective in majors besides BME as well? I want to apply BME but I’m scared Hopkins will think I don’t qualify for Whiting, not even BME.

The only selective program at Hopkins (as of now) is BME. Switching into any other major is as easy as filling out a form - doesn’t matter if you’re going between schools or not.

@saif235 How easy is it to double major between schools? Like CS/Bio double major?

From an administrative perspective, it’s as easy as double majoring within the same school.

From an academic perspective, double majoring between schools can be quite difficult depending on the major combination and the number of AP credits you come in with. Double majors work best when there’s a lot of overlap between the two majors - so double majoring in Biology and Neuroscience is relatively easy since there’s a good amount of overlap in the foundational courses and the upper level electives. However, something like Mechanical Engineering and History would be difficult since there’s basically no overlap.

Computer Science and Biology is, in my opinion, more difficult than the average double major and doesn’t have too much benefit. There’s some overlap in the general ed requirements but little to no other overlap. I know a couple people who’ve done it, but it is not common.

If you want to go into computational biology you’d be best off getting a degree in Computer Science, take a few biology courses (maybe a minor) and apply to a grad school program focusing on computational biology or bioinformatics.

Okay that makes sense. Thank you!

Do you know if admission to Whiting is more selective than other Krieger?

So if I apply to ChemBE or Mechanical Engineering, I would be accepted if Hopkins find me qualify to the university in general?

I asked a college advisor the same question and she said JHU is “major blind” other than BME.

@asdf1112 Theoretically yes, your major shouldn’t matter.
