change major from what you put on your application?

when i originally applied to umd i put down my major as criminology because i wasn't really sure what i wanted, but now i know i want to major in bioengineering. how easy will it be for me to change my major? what do i need to do if i get in to get this changed asap?

Since Engineering is a LEP, you’ll probably need to transfer schools once you get there. I think it’s too late now. For Engineering etc, they accept you into the University and then into the School.

I’m actually not sure…

I was accepted into an LEP and easily switched into another LEP.

But having been accepted into a non LEP program, I don’t know where you stand.

My guess is that if you were academically at the top of the pool (invited into honors humanities/gemstone, for example, or receiving a scholarship), they will switch you into whatever you want with simply a phone call this early in the game. I switched my majors in the summer, in fact.

I suppose the only thing you can do is call and ask. Try the admissions office.

Last year, shortly after being admitted, my daughter switched from a non LEP program into the business school. She was a top applicant (honors/gemstone) and was actually able to do it via email. I believe she contacted the business school directly.

i know that criminology starting in fall 2009 was classified an LEP ([University of Maryland - Limited Enrollment Prorgams](http://www.lep.umd.edu/)) so would that mean I could switch? and what about biochem major? is that an LEP? i am really confused about all of this LEP stuff

@ hcooper:

Let’s say you get in but are not admitted into your selected, LEP program (ex. Biochem, Criminology, etc). If choose to go to UMD, you will go in as a “Letters & Sciences” student. This allows you choose any non-LEP major once you enter UMD. For LEP programs and as an internal transfer, you have to complete the gateway reqs w/ exceptionally good grades (I know some people who could not do this, along w/ the already admitted LEP majors: they are LEP for a reason) and then you might be able to transfer into that LEP program. Sometimes for some programs, like Business, non-LEP chosen students go on to major in Econ. b/c its similar. Or non-eng. majors go on to major in CS… get my drift?
Hope this helps you…
