Change Major In Ucla

Once I get into UCLA's ECON major, can I switch to BIZECON later?
How much difference is there between econ and bizecon?

the difference is exactly 4 management classes.

Admit rates for 07 to both majors were nearly identical…I think there might have been half a percent difference if my memory serves…

biz econ you have to take accounting i think if you haven’t already so

The answer is yes, you may change to BizEcon ONLY IF YOU ARE IN THE SAME DEPARTMENT (Econ Department).
Really, I think applying as BizEcon or Econ or Econ/International Area Studies makes no difference if you plan to major in BizEcon.

Lot of transfers I know got admitted as Pre-Econ and plan to major in BizEcon. I know that the pre-reqs has been added to BizEcon (now the two intro. accounting courses are mandatory whereas it was optional last year) but if you have them complete (whether in CCC or at UCLA) and have a 3.5 GPA average in Econ 11 and 101 (which you will have to take anyway whether you are Pre-Econ or Pre-BizEcon), then you can officially declare to be a BizEcon Major.

But remember, this is only allowed if you are part of the same department. If you transfer as Psychology major (which is not part of Econ department), then you are not allowed to switch to BizEcon.

As for the second part of your question, there really isn’t that much of difference between an Econ major and a BizEcon major.

The requirement for Econ major is 9 upper division economics courses including Econ 101 and 102 (Microeconomics theory and Macroeconomics theory) and 3 other econ courses from the selected course list (you do the search), Total 12 Econ courses. However you can fulfill one or two of the nine elective courses by taking accounting courses.

The requirement for BizEcon is 6 upper division econ courses including Econ 101, 102 and 103, two from the Econ 106 series, and four upper division Management Courses (which are basically accounting).

Now one thing you should realize is that BizEcon allows you take 106 series. Incase you do not know what those are, 106 series are the more business orientated courses such as:

Econ 106E: Economics of Entrepreneurship,
Econ 106F: Finance
Econ 106G: Game Theory
Econ 106H: Enterprise, Technology, and Entrepreneurship in American Economic History,
Econ 106I: Organization of the Firm,
Econ 106P: Pricing and Strategy
Econ 106V: Investments.

You must take at least two from the above courses and these 7 courses are strictly restricted to BizEcon majors only (meaning only BizEcon majors are allowed to take these courses). I think this privilege is what separates BizEcon from the regular Econ major.

Sure, you for BizEcon you have to take Accounting courses but even as an Econ major you are free to take any Accounting courses and minor in it (which requries you to complete 7 accounting courses). On the other hand, the 106 series is exclusive to the BizEcon major, and for this reason, the BizEcon is considered to be an Honors major (requires certain level of GPA for admission).

So basically, if you are fine with pure economics (or detest accounting), you’d be better off majoring in Economics. However if your interest lies in accounting and/or finance and banking, you’ll find BizEcon more relevant to your needs.

how come UCLA wont allow ppl to change their major gosh!

^ i think you can, i read on their site from some pages, you can always petition for the major change but you would have to already take the upper division classes of that major first before you can petition for the change but it’s not always guarantee and it involve more during hte process, you would have to talk to the dept of that major and talk with a counselor and they would have to sign the petition and all that…

oh so basically take upper division course and your gud rite?

dhl is right. I just checked assist.org and you can switch majors within the same department. You practically cant chance majors if it was in another department. If you are soc major, u cant switch to communications because the comm department is super competitive and they would require you to re-apply. By then, your gpa will have gone down and you wouldnt be competitive; so technically, one wouldnt get in even if you take upper division courses in their department.

how ridiculous would it be to apply as an econ major for LA w/ a missing 2nd semester calc pre-req?

i’m not even eligible to take 2nd semester calc until this summer

it’s an automatic rejection, bum.
Don’t even apply with missing pre-req for econ dept majors.

take it during the summer than. thats a hard class, i would recommend taking the class at a cc that has a 1 session summer so it wont be so concentrated
