I'm planning on going to UCLA as a philosophy major, however I want to double major or completely change my major to either psychobio or MIMG. How would I go about this? Is this possible? I have most of the pre-reqs done for these majors and a high GPA (3.9) so it's not like I tried to loophole into an impacted major. What are my chances of getting into either of these majors? I know that psychobio is impacted but MIMG isn't.

The average admitted GPAs for these majors are ~3.6 for MIMG and ~3.7 for psychobio btw

They do not let transfers switch in life science majors at all. You have to be admitted into a life science major.

“Demand for the life sciences majors significantly exceeds space available. Because these majors require the completion of extensive preparatory coursework prior to transfer, you must be admitted directly into a life sciences major; you will not be able to change from a non-life sciences major after admission to UCLA.”

http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/lsmajors/life_sci.htm

On my application it states that you cannot transfer into any life science majors, I don’t know if that is considered a life science major but you can call and ask. I know they have restrictions towards transfers transferring into certain majors.

Why didn’t you apply to those majors? Berkeley will let you switch if you choose to go there. Changing into an impacted major at UCLA is very difficult. Their official policy is that they don’t allow it, though if you can convince the respective department to let you in they can do it, but that very rarely happens.

I applied fresh out of high school so I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. ^ Would I be able to take the life science classes for a year and then try to switch after a year if I got a good enough GPA?

not to hijack this thread but what about minoring in those subjects?
for example, political science is an impacted major. however, they never say anything about the minor.

Like I said, they don’t let you switch into impacted majors. There are a few exceptions, but those are rare. UCLA is very strict on this. High GPA and all pre-reqs completed isn’t going to change their stance.

I don’t think that a Political Science minor is offered at UCLA anymore. I think they recently got rid of it.

What’s wrong with Philosophy? Serious question.

Anthro major here

Okay how about MIMG then? @LAforlife jw but do you go to UCLA?

I like philosophy alot and I hope to still major in it. It’s just that Law school isn’t as rewarding as med school nowadays and even though you could go to med school as a philosophy major I feel like I’d be much more successful as a med school applicant if I was a psychobio major.

^You’re not allowed to switch into ANY major in the life sciences department from any major outside of the department. If you were admitted into a major in the department you’re allowed to switch to another non-impacted major within the department, but you have to have been admitted directly into it already. For example, if you were admitted into neuroscience and wanted to switch to MIMG that would be possible. Switching from philosophy to a life science major isn’t unless you directly get permission from the department.

I don’t go to UCLA, but have done a lot of research on it and I will be attending in the fall.

Here is list of minors offered at UCLA:

I guess I was wrong, they do still offer a Political Science minor. I had heard rumors that they were gonna get rid of it.

I have seen that you can’t switch into a life science major as an applicant. But people who have transferred to UCLA and attend the school have told me you can change into an impacted major, even a life science major, if you take the pre-reqs, have a high enough GPA and support it with a legitimate petition. No offense, but I was looking for someone who has transferred to UCLA already and has firsthand insight on the subject. I can see and have seen what UCLA provides on their website so re-stating it here isn’t necessarily what I was looking for.

Then you should post on UCLA’s forum, obviously most people on here are CC students.

Just wanted to clear it up, they did not get rid of the political science minor but you had to have been “grandfathered in” to declare it. They allow students to apply every 3 years now. It’s very hard to change majors at UCLA because a lot of them (like life sciences) are just not an option.

I’m not sure who you talked to. If you believe them that you can just get into any major by pushing your way in, then I wouldn’t ask the opinions of others. When I was there, counselors told me blatantly that it was impossible to get into their department as a transfer who had not been admitted. I guess the only way you would know if that tactic works would be to just take the chance and attempt it.

Good luck!
