Background Info:
- High School: Extremely rigorous, top 50 high schools in the nation
- Indian (South Asian)
- Income: 150k

Computer Science Major!

I messed up really bad in high school until junior year. W = weighted, UW, = unweighted
Sophmore year: 3.0 UW (3.167 W), 2.67 UW (2.83W)
Junior Year: 3.67 UW (4.167 W), 3.67 UW (4.167 W)
UC GPA: 3.62

SATs (Barely prepped):
1st attempt: 1850
2nd attempt: 1980

Going to attempt again in October, I'm positive I will get at least a 2100, and possibly a 2200, I'm studying 2 hours daily every weekday over the summer.

ACT:
1st attempt: 32
Going to attempt again in September, aiming for 34 or higher.

SATII: Math (760), Bio (770)

Others:
- 150 hours community service
- DECA (Business Club):
- 3rd in Northern California for Math Marketing
- 4th for presentation, 8th overall for Advertising Campaign in States competition
- YouTube Channel on Technology (relates to my major, computer science)
- 2,800 subscribers
- My technology guides and reviews have been watched 1.1 MILLION times
- Started an organization this summer to raise money for charity through online gaming. Raised about $700 so far.
- Intro to Computer Science course over the summer, got an A
- Intro to Programming in C course over the summer, got an A

What are my chances of getting in? I'm extremely passionate about technology and would love if I could further develop my knowledge by majoring in Comp Sci at great college.

I have been slacking throughout high school until junior year. At the summer, end of the sophmore year, I went to India and realized I am taking everything I have for granted. While others in India are yearning to learn but forced in mediocre schools, if any, I am slacking off, even though I am given the opportunity to attend one of the nations top 50 high schools. The vacation to India opened my eyes, and I realized I need to make the most of my fortunate situation. I tried throughout junior year, with 3 AP courses, and got a 3.67 unweighted, 4.167 weighted GPA.

Well, your ECs show that you have a passion for computer technology and math, which is great. Colleges love improvement, but I think a GPA of 3.7+ would get you safely in (correct me if I’m wrong). But don’t worry, get a high SAT/ACT score (2200/34 looks good), write a heartfelt essay and just do your best in the interview, and you’ll be pretty competitive for admission. As of now, you seem to be in the middle range, not the best nor the worst, but I think you can make it if you just try.
From the sister of a UMich sophomore.

I know a lot of people on the adcom, and they emphasize GPA. They like seeing a continued effort in HS. However, your HS status may mitigate your GPA dilemma (if your high school is ‘rigorous’).

So unless you can blow them out of the water with a good essay + application, your GPA may bring you down. It’s ■■■■■■■■, I know. I don’t believe I would get in to UofM if I applied this year (i had a 3.3 GPA and a 35 ACT in HS).

From a U of M Rising Junior

The big question mark is how they will look at the GPA. Your cumulative GPA will not be high enough under normal circumstances for admission. The 3.67 junior year GPA would put your GPA below the typical student offerred admission so I think U-M is still a reach. The test scores and the rest of your background look good so I think it may help to focus on confronting the so-called freshman and sophomore year slacking. A good essay topic would be to talk about the trip to India and how it changed your outlook on things.

The thing is that Michigan weighs GPA much more heavily than test scores, and I think freshman grades now count. With just soph & junior years, you have a slim chance, but if your freshman GPA was sub-three I don’t think you’ll get in. Sorry.

Aw, it’s okay. Thanks for the help guys.

Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try your absolute hardest when sending in your application and essays. Nobody here works in the admissions office and could not tell you what exactly the admissions office is going to look for each batch of applications. Just put your best effort into your essays and academic coursework going forward.

I blew through high school with a 4.0 (4.0 was max) with many APs and little effort. I was surprised with how hard I had to work at UM my freshman year (had a 3.8 but could have done better). You need to find the college which is the best fit for you. Generally your gpa is an indication of your work ethic while your test scores are a measure of your iq. Being smart isn’t enough to succeed at UM because you are going to need to work hard too. Good luck and GO BLUE!

Yeah, except your high school may have a much less rigorous curriculum than my school.

HeyImAlok, instead of asking us, you should check your Naviance. As you point out, you may attend a school where 4.0 GPAs are impossible to maintain and 3.5 students go to Harvard.

What’s Naviance? Will the courses are much more rigorous, the students have adapted for the most part. Sure, overall GPAs arent 4.5 which if often seen here on CC, but more around 4.2 or so for a top 10% student.

In fact, we have some really crazy students. One kid got a 4.0 fresh year, 4.0 soph, 5.0 junior, and 4.83 senior. 2390 SAT, cross country. Started a micro lending organization that loans out money interest free to people who want to create their own startups but don’t have funding. Raised $10k, got shouted out by Obama, front page of yahoo, interviewed by NBC.

Stanford, class of 2016. How he got wait listed at Harvard I have no clue.
