Change of major after acceptance

Hey everyone,

I'm thrilled to have received an acceptance letter to one of my schools of choice: CSU Long Beach. The only thing I have a problem with right now is my choice of major. The school accepted me as an Art History major, but I would like to change it to Art. I have all the requirements completed for both majors. Eventually I would like to apply for the BFA program, which will happen after one or two semesters of attendance at the school, but let's say I don't get accepted to that program; I don't want to study Art History, I want to pursue Art. Even in those one or two semesters before applying I'd like to take classes for the Art major, not Art History Major. I hope this makes sense. I'm hesitant on asking the school the possibility of changing my major so soon after being accepted, but I don't want to wait too long either before my chance is over. If anyone knows anything about changing majors before attending CSU Long Beach as a transfer student, please provide any tips or information that you can. THANKS!

bump for anyone who knows anything about the Cal State system, especially CSULB

Call the school and ask them. I think its possible but you’d want to make sure by asking some sort of administrator that works at the school.

I’ve a similar problem as yourself because I’ve been offered admissions to CSULB as an English Lit major, but now I decided to major in Comparative World Literature. I’ve asked my transfer adviser at my cc that it’s hard to change to a different major after your acceptance as long as it’s a totally different major from a different college.

With you wanting to change to an Art major, I’ve checked the school site and it’s currently within the CSULB School of Art, just a different concentration - not a different major.

What I advise is to accept the offer admission and transfer there. You can always change to a different concentration after a semester by talking to your department adviser. Just do not change your major now because CSULB will drop you from admissions.

Don’t worry, it shouldn’t be a problem. I myself am about to double major at CSULB in studio arts and film theory. Keep in mind that their BFA program has a portfolio requirement that takes place in Fall and Spring. You have to be at the school for at least 1 semester before submitting a portfolio for review. Since you’ve already been accepted, it should be easier for you to transfer to the major. Even if it means you won’t officially be a BFA student until the Spring semester. Hope that helps.
