Change of major after acceptance???

I have taken a good amount of philosophy and english classes and I want to major in english and minor in philosophy. But, I don't want to apply as an english major (UC's, USC, etc) because there are so many more english applicants and the acceptance rate for philosophy is higher.

Supposing I have the requirements met for both majors, is it possible to apply as a philosophy major and switch to english after I am accepted?

In most cases, the major you select in the application process is non-binding and you are free to change once you are accepted. But you are restricted in that you cannot easily change majors from one school to another. (i.e. Political Science to Business)

Freshman .. ya .. but for transfer students .. I thought they have to stay with that major?

anybody else?

You could maybe double major, if possible...

At most schools you have to declare a major your sophmore year. If you already done that and plan on changing it itll more than likely set your graduation date back because you now have to take new classes for you major. But theres always the option of double majoring......but its alot of work if your not commited to it.

Please put UC in the title of the thread so that us UCers can find it.

Anyway, yes, depending on the particular UC and colleges involved, you have to petition for a major once you actually get to the school anyway. It can't be guaranteed that you can petition and successfully get in to a major you didn't apply for of course though.

But there are other reasons not to apply for a major you are less interested in. You must write the personal statement on your major, and a lack of interest can be easy to see. It's also just generally dishonest; what if you received a spot for philosophy, while causing an actual philosophy major to be rejected?
