Changes at NYU Stern and UMich?

I'm an Asian, freshmen at college, applying for sophomore transfer.

Public competitive High School - Instate for Michigan
High School UW GPA : 2.921 (Pretty hard schedule)
Weighted UMich GPA: 2.75
ACT: 26
SAT: N/A
SATII: N/A
Class Rank: 146 / 321

College - Western Michigan University (4 year University)
GPA: 4.0 (16 credits) - hardest schedule allowed
Next semester: I'm taking 20 credits, pretty good chance at another 4.0

I'm applying to University of Michigan - Ann Arbor (LSA) and NYU - Stern

I'm can do good essays, been revising them for many hours, passing them through english majors, and finally gonna get them checked by some people at CC.

The reason for my grade drop is because of a lot of personal things. Mother had mental disease, brother was born in my late Freshmen year and I had to take care of him most of high school, grandparents died, parents divorced, and father was gone most of the time on business trips for most of high school. Finally realized life doesn't get good with moping around, got my act together senior year, too late to make a true difference.

In terms of EC, it's not as much as general CC kids but it's something...

Violin for 8 years, Section leader of Violins for 4.
--In Chamber Orchestra of probably one of the best High School Orchestras in Michigan.
--Toured Europe last year Summer for Mozart's 250th Birthday
--Youth Orchestra Section Leader since 8th grade
--University of Michigan orchestra competition, only high school orchestra invited
--Solo & Ensemble 1st Division violinist and quartet leader

all in total about like 20-30 hours a week easily

Tennis for 11th grade - 15 hours a week
--JV Tennis

-Key Club for 10th grade - 5-10 hours a week

-International Internship at a design company in Shenzhen, China. Worked 40+ hour weeks and helped on a major project - (brought in an architect, was translator, and did actual work on apt buildings)

I know that it'll probably take 1.5 - 2 years to actually get into those schools, but I quite honestly hate the school I'm going to right now, so I want to get out of here ASAP.

Can't retake ACT / SAT btw, they won't retake my new scores.

bump to the top

As far as NYU the ACT 26 is low for Stern. Your HS GPA makes NYU a big reach. But one never knows for certain.

I'm not sure how much Western Michigan helps. You are in-state so it might help with U Mich. Your counselor at the Western U should be able to rate your chances at U Mich. It would seem U Mich gives you a better chance. Best of Luck.

bump, I've submitted my app for UMich

I know I have like no chance at NYU so disregard that... only worried about UMich atm

Well its obvious ur trying to get into Ross which is actually signficantly more difficult to get into than NYU's stern..so I'd be worried about NYU. Your current GPA at Western Michigan is solid but i have to agree your ACT's are a little too low to get into either.

Na, LSA right now. Ross is way too much of a reach for me.

I would disagree that UMich is the tougher school to gain admittance. They are close and his in-state status makes UMich a better shot. Overall UMich has about a 53% acceptance rate.Remember unlike Stern you don't start out in Ross. In state residency is a big leg up.

I'd work incredibly hard to get into Ross, but I do know that I probably have no chance.

HS was just a bad time in my life, I had a good reason, do they actually look at that? or is it just another meh interesting... thing?

anyone who's read my essays would know what I'm talking about.

atm, I'm just attempting to enter LSA first, taking things small step at a time. I dont' wanna do a junior transfer because I won't get into Ross that late (probably) and graduate in 2010. I have this huge thing with graduating on time... I hate being left behind and stuff.

Yes, your problems in high school were far more limiting than many that I've seen. Given your very good performance in college and personal situation, I think you're in for sure at UMich LSA. If you really want a better shot at NYU, perhaps retaking the ACT and scoring well (30 or so) would be the tipping factor. They don't actually consider scores taken during college, but the adcom said they "can't help but see them" and it would at least further the argument that you are intelligent enough to do well at Stern.

And isn't Ross a 3 year program? I think you'd have to transfer into it as a sophomore or graduate late.

the thing is I'm not exactly too sure on Ross's program. I know that it's a 3 year program, but I'm hoping that I could maybe get in (if it's possible) 1st or 2nd semester, (aka after a year), or take summer classes to get enough of my UMich GPA up that I can get into Ross.

My boss offered me internships this summer, so it's either summer classes at UMich (if I get in) or go to HK for internships. I'd rather get into Ross.

If anyone can clear that up, as in, if I could take summer classes to get into Ross, please fill me in.

The reason I didn't retake my ACT, was that the adcom for NYU was so... against me retaking it. to the point he was saying "No! You can not retake the ACT once you're in college!!"

last bump to put my mind to rest

2.75 going into stern or Ross is almost impossible unless ... well unless your dad sits on the comittee.. the cut off for NYU Stern is 3.3 uw my sister works for admission at stern

sorry........but high high reach

well It's a transfer so hopefully they won't look that much on HS grades...

the weighted 2.75 was using the UMich weighting system, while not much more, the normal gpa is a 2.9~

I know it's a big stretch anyway, just wondering chances

how is that possible unweighted is higher than weighted? If you already HAD 30 credits, your high school recs won't matter that much. Only gpa in college matters. 4.0 is more than enough for a state school transfer. so michigan is a match. NYU is a reach still.

basically UMich GPA weighted is like this

A - 4
B - 3
C - 2
D - 1
F - 0

I had a lot of B+'s, a few A's and one or two C's. They also only counted Sophomore and Junior years, which sadly were really bad years for me. Also they only counted academic classes. Generally UMich GPAs are lower for normal students than for those who are already on top.

ohh well good luck,

did you mean had as in, have by time of transfer or had as in before this semester? I was just reading over previous threads and was kinda confused

thanks

I think have completed 30 credits by the time u apply.
