Changes on Solar website..does that mean im in?

Hello everyone ! (and Chris from SBU admissions because we all know you read every post :P)

I noticed a couple of new categories on the Solar website.

-For New Students (to pay for deposit, etc)
-Campus Financial Services
-Campus Housing

When i click on For New Students it prompts me to pay a starting deposit, yet.. my application status still says

"Thank you for applying to Stony Brook University. Your application is currently being processed. We will contact you if we are missing any items needed to render a decision."

Does this mean cough i'm accepted? cough or at least increase my chances at best? I can't wait for the decision any hint of acceptance i'll take haha. Thanks in advance!

This “bug” has been around for awhile. I haven’t heard of anyone who hasn’t gotten the “New Student” section on SOLAR that didn’t officially get in.

Well it’s a bug that definitely messes with minds haha. Why else would this suddenly come up if one was rejected? I know it’s not a definite “You’re admitted to SBU” but hey, at least it’s something; i just wanted to confirm it with people who know exactly why this bug occurs.

Hmmm…

Chris

@Chris :O?

Whoops double post, but i went through some searching and i found this post by you, Chris.

This dates back awhile so i dont know if it still rings true but…

"sbuadmissions: Yep, that’s been the dirty little secret that we weren’t able to do anything about with the SOLAR system. There’s a delay between the system decision and when it appears on the student’s screen; that gives the admissions letter and packet time to get there.

But if your screen changed, and you see “New Student Preferences,” you can safely say that we consider you a new student, so unofficially, congrats!"

!?!??!?!?

so is it a bug that tells you what they don’t want you to know yet? I’m confused.

This is likely what happens:

Admissions decisions are made…

Admissions letter is sent out, but takes longer to reach via US-Mail to recipient

Admissions sets your status as “accepted” on University systems and SOLAR adjusts automatically instantaneously

There is no way to “synchronize” the arrival of an admissions letter and update of the system to reflect your new status. Too many variables in the first one.

Haha whooohoo thanks DJStony!

But it doesn’t say accepted anywhere on the site. It just has the new choices as whotheman points out. I hope the actual letter says accepted! :)

Eh, but approach with uncertainty. Don’t go out and celebrate only to receive something you didn’t anticipate in the mail…

That’s just it. There are lots of reasons why the system does what it does – and yes, my post from a few years ago is one of them. But ultimately, until you have a letter in hand or you see it on SOLAR for real, please be patient.

But yes, it looks like we’re getting SOME decisions out a little earlier than anticipated. Please, though… if you’re not in this first group, it doesn’t mean anything at all. There are still a lot of applications to read; we just wanted to start getting some out the door.

Thanks.

Chris

Have any acceptance letters been sent out yet? My “SOLAR” page updated with the new sections as well, but I’m wondering if a letter is on it’s way.

My D and I are thrilled. Her ‘new’ SOLAR tab appeared on Monday … her SOLAR ‘App Status’ changed to “Congrats! You’ve been admitted …” today. Also, says her acceptance letter s/b received within 2 weeks.

Me too! Status changed within the last hour to admitted!

Me too! "Congratulations! You’ve been admitted to Stony Brook University. " Well that was quick :)

Mine changed as well. :D

YAY!

Again, however – I’ll refer to my comment from the other day:

If you’re not in this first group, it doesn’t mean anything at all. There are still a lot of applications to read; we just wanted to start getting some out the door.

If I could make that bold print, extra large, underlined, whatever – I’d do it. Congratulations to those of you who got decisions; everyone else, PLEASE hang in there!

Chris

Admitted, but no info about financial aid. When will we find out financial aid awards?

haha I got in too!
Are the honors college decisions going to come out in april?
