The system we are currently using for emoji reactions is no longer supported and contributed to the icons problem we experienced this fall. So we are moving to a new system for adding emojis to posts.
We will continue to use likes, but we’ll be adding a check mark and a light bulb:
We can add other reactions in the future based on your feedback. It doesn’t happen often, but I have heard complaints about people using an emoji dismissively. We won’t be allowing reactions, but I’m more than open to adding emojis that express other sentiments. (I find useful for expressing emotional support, for instance.)
On desktop, you’ll be able to select a reaction other than “like” by hovering over the thumbs up icon. On a mobile device, the other reactions can be selected using a long press on the thumb icon. Clicking or tapping the “like” icon works as a like as normal. If you want to remove a reaction, just click or tap it again.
This change will be coming next week. At the same time we are deploying a few changes behind the scenes that ought to keep the forums stable during increased traffic this month and in March. I don’t anticipate any interruptions as a result of these changes.
Any chance CC will be selling the emojis’ non-fungible tokens/NFTs as a poignant reminder of our time together? I hear there’s a lot of crypto readily available to fund these purchases.
I miss being able to react with any emoji. But fine, whatevs.
Except that now I can’t react with any emoji at all—hovering my mouse cursor results in a tooltip reading “Like this post”, but nothing else. (And it seems wrong to react to some of the posts on, e.g., the college closings thread with a like, you know?)
