I love Colby after looking at all of the things on their website but after looking on YouTube I have found two extensive documentaries showing the bad sides of Colby. Both detailing the lack of inclusivity, strain on the relationship with the town and how bad the school handled the Bob Diamond issue. All of this was alarming and I noticed that all of this came out from before the new president was in office. So I was wondering from people in the Colby community, has the college gotten better under this new leadership?
President Greene seems to have done an excellent job in improving the relationship between the school and the community. Colby just opened a dorm in downtown Waterville and students who live there must commit to volunteering in the town. If you can visit the school in person, I would you suggest you do so. It is a beautiful place, but you must be ok with cold weather and the remote location. Once we visited, Colby went to the top of my son’s list. He just finished his first semester and has been very happy there. Good luck with your search!
President Greene is amazing and has made some great changes. My son is a sophomore and is very happy there. He has never spoken about any issues on campus or with the town. Definitely visit and see for yourself.
Regarding one of those videos, “Colby Life Documentary”
"This is a documentary I made for an independent study at Colby College in my senior year. My goal was to take a serious look at how students change throughout their four years in college. I feel tremendously grateful and lucky to have found such honest, incredibly intelligent, introspective students to interview. Proud to say that they each went on to do amazing things.
We all move on after college. I hope this documentary gives students attending Colby College, and other schools like it, a wide perspective so they realize everything’s going to be okay. We’ve all been there. Believe me."
Speaking of moving on , Its my understanding that the maker of said documentary is now an assistant producer in Hollywood , breaking into the competitive film business there because of Colby’s alumni connections!!
President Greene Is fantastic. D is very happy.
I had someone working in my PE fund who came from single mom, African American household in the Boston area. He went to Cornell undergrad engineering and his brother went to Colby (then to Cornell Law). He highly recommended Colby based on his brother’s experience and numerous visits. Says it all.
The quotation from the documentarian seems more dispiriting than the documentary itself. If accepted literally, she appears to have stated that “everything’s going to be okay” after “[we’ve] all [moved] on” from Colby.
