I applied and was accepted EA to ND as an Environmental Engineering major. I had always wanted to be an engineer, but now I am reconsidering. Can I change colleges/majors before I begin next fall, if I want to? How does the process work? I understand there is a First Year of Studies Program, but is it different for engineers? Thanks for your help!

It is different for Engineers in that in the First Year Studies program, you have to take an Intro to Engineering course. It is much easier to transfer out of engineering than it is to transfer into engineering. Also, the Calc, Chem and Physics requirements are geared toward engineering in FYS as well. As far as generally changing majors, there is no difficulty in changing as this is what FYS is created for. It allows one to explore and decide on a major essentially w/o penalty. If you decide to change majors, you will want to talk to your FYS advisor, once assigned. Your advisor will register you for your freshman fall sem courses and they will need to know what intended major you would like to begin. FYS advisors are there to help you with all of these types of issues. It is a great program, esp for those trying to decide on a major!

thank you! I know that the FYS sends out a mailing in May or June which asks which college and major you are. Can I select a different college/major than I put on my application?
Thanks again!

Easily. You can probably do that up until about early August. You should have been assigned an advisor (or will at some point), and all you really have to do is e-mail them. They send out the mailing because it makes their job easier, but their job is to help you, regardless of how much or how often you change your mind.

thank you!!
