After this school year my dad plans on moving out of state which will leave me living with my mom. This year I filed my dad as my custodial parent on my FAFSA, but next year as I will be living with my mom I plan on filing her. Will this cause any issues as my mom makes far less than my dad and will leave me eligible for a high amount in grants?
sometimes kids switch where they live in terms of parent. It should not be a problem. does your college guarantee to meet full need for all? If not, this change might not net you increased aid.
The school might ask for some kind of documentation if they think it’s a fishy situation. I think if you have something like a lease or mortgage for your OOS dad, this could do the trick.
But really…you won’t be the first kid to live with a different parent in a subsequent year.
The FAFSA for next year will be available in October 2016. When you determine custodial parent it goes by whom you lived with more in the 365 days immediately before filing FAFSA. Will your mom qualify? When exactly is your dad moving?
But you don’t have to file in October! You can wait and do it later!!! You
