Hi. I'm very curious about changing disciplines in Graduate School. I graduated with a BS in Sociology and applied to Graduate School in Psychology. Now I'm in a really good Psychology program and am about to complete my Master's. However, I really do not like Psychology; my true love is Sociology. Further, I'm not statistically savvy and I hate (really hate) conducting experiments using undergraduates as Guinea Pigs.

Therefore, I am going to start applying to Sociology programs around the U.S.

I realize that I will have to "start over" as it were but this is a price that I am willing to pay to actually pursue a career as a professor that I love.

The one thing that I am having trouble with is this: How do I tell my adviser and my Graduate School? I'm in a Ph.D. program with no true terminal Master's. I'm afraid that my adviser and the school will be upset by my decision but what can I do? I'd make a lousy psychologist and I need to be happy in my profession.

Any advice on breaking such news to your Graduate School? I simply think that a reasonable adviser would understand and, while perhaps disappointed, would support any such decision. Perhaps I'm being idealistic but Professors change schools if given better offers all the time and I am changing because I realize the program is not right for me and that I need to be working in sociology.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
