Changing ED II to RD

I did ED II to NYU. Would it be detrimental to my application to email them and ask to be switched to the RD pool?

Can you afford NYU and will you definitely attend if admitted? If yes to both then leave it. If you can’t afford NYU without aid then I would move it to RD so you can compare admission results including FA across schools.

Why are you thinking about making a change?

If by detrimental you mean would it reduce your chances of admission, yes. Not because they will be “upset” with you, but because nyu is one of the schools where there is a clear advantage to applying ED. Also, judging from what my daughter (current freshman) has said, there seems to be a significant number* in the RD pool comprising those that were rejected or deferred from early ivy/T20 applications, implying that the pool itself is just more competitive than ED.

*actually tbh I don’t know that there is a significant number in the pool itself but she says a number of her classmates fall into this category, with excellent stats.

All that said, as @“Erin’s Dad” above has said, if you need to move the app for financial reasons, or even if you are just second guessing whether you want to be bound there if made an offer, then call admissions and tell them you need to move it. You don’t need to say why.

@SJ2727

Thank you for the reply. I still really want to go to NYU (top choice) but because of some issues and shifts in family plans for the next four years, am not 100% comfortable being bound to the school until some things get sorted out.

Is this email appropriate to send as my request to the admissions office:

“I was wondering if it would be possible to move my application from the Early Decision II Pool to Regular Decision? My full name: XXXX XXXXX; My Common App ID: XXXXX.”

Thank you,
XXXX XXXXX

Is there any other information I should include that they would need?
Also, who do I address it to? Bonomi Family Admissions Center?

thanks for your help

I would not say “I was wondering if it would be possible …”, but rather “I request that you …”. I don’t think you need to provide any other information. However, given the timing before ED2 decision date and the likelihood of admissions being flooded with emails right now, I would definitely follow up with a phone call to make sure it is actioned in time. Good luck!

Send it directly to your admissions officer using Dear XXX in your email https://www.nyu.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/questions/admissions-counselors.html

Copy the general admissions email as well.

Good luck.
