changing emails

is it really true that if you're the only person at columbia with your name, you can change your email address to firstname.lastname@columbia.edu? i'd much prefer that to my clunky uni, but alas, it doesn't seem to work for me.

You don't have to -- and can't -- do anything to change your email address if you're the only person with your name. You just tell people to use firstname.lastname@columbia.edu and the server automatically sends the email to you at xyz2000@columbia.edu.

just tried it, doesn't seem to work

How do you know you're the only person wth your name? If it doesn't work, then you probably aren't. (Or, they could have removed the feature.)

I guess they removed the feature b/c my name is pretty obscure

Is your name that obscure -- you think nobody who has ever attended any of Columbia's ugrad/grad schools or worked at Columbia shares your name? That's a helluva lot of people.

as far as i know the feature still exists

I just tried it, and it didn't work.

I think the feature has been disabled. My dad works for CUIT, and he's fairly certain that they got rid of it some time ago.
