Changing final grade?

I have this computer class, where there is coding involved. For my midterm, the assignment was to write a code fragment in under two hours. I decided to use an online html editor for convenience, because the outcome from the coding will automatically be displayed below. The thing is, I accidentally closed the editor in the near end of the class and lost the whole code, because the editor does not automatically save the code. I ended up getting a 0 for the midterm.

We are having a final exam. I did not take it yet, and I really do not know what to expect in it. I wanted to ask my instructor if I can combine my midterm grade with my final grade....so making my final exam count as a midterm and final grade.

Should I do that? Will it be too risky and do you think it is unreasonable to ask my instructor that? I don't want him to think that i am grade grubbing, but the midterm really dropped me a lot and I am in the verge of losing my scholarship because of it. I have done well in all his assignments, and have gone to all the labs (even if it might not be required)

You can always ask. He may very well say no, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. When I was a TA, students used to ask all the time for the final grade to be counted for both midterm and final grades after doing poorly on the midterm. Some professors do it, and some won’t. Most likely, if he gives you that option, he’ll have to do it for everyone, and he may not want to do that. I doubt he’ll hold it against you, unless you’re really rude about it. You never know until you ask.
