What do philosophers do for fun?
sit around and ponder why they’re poor

You make a good argument in that regardless of what you love, you need to focus on a practical career for your future. As happy as I may be now studying philosophy as opposed to chemical engineering, I will have wants in needs in my future that won’t get met if I don’t have a good income coming in (I’m thinking, of course, about me and my family, here). This is why I just cannot let go completely of the chemical engineering degree. I mean, it’s not all that bad. I like it. It just isn’t my passion.

When I graduate with my two degrees, I want to go to law school. As a patent attorney, one must have a Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering. This is where my degree will meet with my passion for logic and arguing, philosophy and law, writing and helping people directly. I only hope that I will enjoy my legal career. I think I will write books on the side as a personal hobby of mine and because I think it will make me happy.

Later on in life, I think I can be happy as a patent attorney. Some make millions, some make less than engineers, but if I make somewhere in-between and still have the happiness to do things that interest me and bring in money, too (like writing books or giving public speeches), then I am certain that I will have what I need to be both happy and a supporting father/husband.

When my kids start to grow, I want to be able to tell them to follow their dream, and if I don’t do the same I will never be able to tell them that while looking them in the eye. I prefer to lead by example.

Thank you for your comment.

LaBarrister, I’m also doubling up in Philosophy and Engineering. Philosophy is fantastic. Every night before I fall asleep, thoughts about the material we cover rush through my head. I’m strongly considering applying to graduate school programs for Philosophy.
Great decision on your part! I’d recommend the combination of a Liberal Arts + Engineering degree to just about anybody who’d be up for it.

Awesome! Best of luck! I’m so glad you contributed to this post!

I’m the same way as you, and I think the two areas of study are a sweet combo.

Thanks for posting!
