Changing from Management to Industrial Engineering

Hey, first semester Business Management student here. Here's my situation:
I was originally planning on getting a dual degree in Management and Psychology (psych is what I've wanted to do for a while), which I felt would give me a strong background in any corporate setting. However, I've always felt like it's not really using my brain to its full potential; I'm a smart kid (not to gloat, but I honestly am) and some days I truly feel like a business degree will waste some of my potential. I heard someone mention Industrial Engineering and call it "sort of like management 2.0" and now I've been doing some research, and IE sounds like it could be the thing for me.
However, it's an engineering major and I realize that it will consume a lot more time than business might. I'm worried that, since I'm already a semester into my undergrad career, I might be behind on the critical tracking courses and have to take an extra semester or two. Also, I had planned on learning a language (possibly Chinese) and maybe even studying abroad (in China if I learned Chinese, obviously) and I feel as though I probably can't if I switch majors. However, I do like the allure of an engineering degree.
So, basically, is switching to an engineering major 1 semester in to college a viable option?

if you’re interested in factory management and designing systems, go into industrial/systems engineering. if you’re interested in business, look into the information systems and operations research combined degree program. i think its exactly what you’re looking for.

in either case, psych is pretty much a waste of your time. take some electives for interest maybe, but you don’t need do the whole thing to get the background you seek.

but i really get the impression that ISOM is what you’re looking for. the fact that it offers a combined degree program, and the fact that we have a very highly ranked and recruited from operations program is very encouraging.

aforautumn, how is Information Systems different from Industrial Engineering? From what I’ve read on the web, engineering just seems like a more intensive version of info. systems

DO INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING!!!

I’m a first semester student as well. I’m pursuing a dual degree in IE & Business…

In terms of study abroad, there is an abundance of opportunities for IEs. Example: Next semester there is a 16 week study abroad in China where you can complete 3 courses as well as learn chinese… Do ISE! You won’t regret it! So much more beneficial then business!

Thank you for the support ufgator18, that makes me feel a lot better about the whole study abroad thing.
The only downside is that I’ve wasted two classes on Warrington Welcome and CGS2531, both of which really haven’t taught me anything and were critical tracking for business.

I’m sorry! But… you should definitely come ASAP over to Weil Hall and speak to Cynthia the adviser for IE. Or just to learn more about what Industrial Engineering is all about. I think you will really like it.

information systems is more business oriented–logistics, optimization, etc… systems engineering covers similar methods, but is more concerned with industrial applications (obviously). if your interested in logistics and business operations, do the business program. the engineering program is ‘more intensive’ than the information systems undergraduate program. i’m talking about the combined degree program for ISOM–this does not require you to major in information systems.

the question should be whether you want to work as an engineer or in a business environment.
