Changing How Engineers are Educated

One of the key purposes behind the creation of Olin College was to change the way engineers are educated. There are numerous articles on the Olin website which discuss this.

Some Olin students have taken the concepts they are learning at Olin and applied them to creating a video which addresses motivating students to learn. This video focuses on using engineering ideas to face this challenge of education.

Examples include designing curricula around learning by doing, students' needs and values, and interdisciplinary lessons. Through the application of these ideas, instructors can change their curricula so it is designed in a way that supports and enhances student motivation.

The Olin students submitted their video to the Global Grand Challenges Short Video Competition. I think you will agree that it is very engaging and far from what you expect students at an engineering school to be doing.
That’s wonderful…thanks for sharing!

That’s a very creative entry…appreciate the link.

Just in time you can watch this CNN video that has reference to Olin’s Robotic Fish video [Video - Breaking News Videos from CNN.com](<a href=“Video News - CNN”>Video News - CNN) while explaining role of drones…

Another vid from Olin, that I had not seen before, is now on their admissions page. See the video at [Olin College](Admission + Financial Aid | Olin College of Engineering) It looks like a conference hosted by a $1B company, National Instruments, based in Austin, TX.

I like the entire video but I LOVE the inside joke Jamie drops between 7:32 and 7:40.

Thanks for sharing the video about the Sailbot team. There are many other Sailbot videos online, but this is the best.

jeffgordon

Thanks for sharing that video, I hadn’t seen it before and it highlights the Sailbot team and shows how well Olin students and grads excel in public speaking since they have lots of practice while at Olin.
The project is very impressive.

Nice! The more we see the more we love Olin.

FlMathMom, bay area mom and carimama, (wow, lots of moms out there - I’m a dad  glad you enjoyed the video. I am most impressed with the two students in the video.

There must be lots of video of faculty members at Olin as well. My favorite is this one, which has led me to try and improve my street fighting skills. Check out [TEDxCaltech - Sanjoy Mahajan - Rote Learning Fragments the World - YouTube](<a href=“TEDxCaltech - Sanjoy Mahajan - Rote Learning Fragments the World - YouTube”>TEDxCaltech - Sanjoy Mahajan - Rote Learning Fragments the World - YouTube)

Thanks Jeff - cool video. Our son had mentioned liking “Sanjoy” lectures, but I had not thought to look on youtube.

New status on CC for me: appreciation from 4 consecutive "mom"s. You are most welcome. Thanks back.

And now, to keep those yellow dots next to thread titles bubbled in, tell me what you think of this one. Apologies if you’ve seen it, but it is short and sweet. I’m sure new admits will relate, especially from 0:25 on.

I love that video! ^
Thanks for posting!

That was a great video. Love the “How to Cancel AP tests” at the end.

Five moms (hi m0m0f3). And PA-C. Glad someone is watching. There’s lots of good footage about this great school. I have one more and then I’ll stop. It’s probably the most widely seen Olin video, so, apologies if it’s a rerun for you. But I never get tired of it.
Jeffgordon - thanks for the TED video. I subscribe to various Olin videos, but that one slipped by. Our fingers are crossed for your son and all those who love Olin. Believe me, we empathize with your journey. PM if you need to vent. It’s best to keep a neutral face with you child (Yeah, right!). Stop laughing.

Hope that link works.
The video explains the mission of Olin College and how the college’s mission has changed the way students are taught engineering.

bay area mom- great video thank you

My father- who had previously been negative regarding son applying to relatively new lesser known engineering college- saw this segment on tv and now is a huge Olin fan!

This will make things much easier if son is accepted and decides to attend Olin!! lol

It’s interesting how everyone in the family suddenly has an opinion on where DS should attend college. I wonder if they will be so invested when the bills start coming in? ;)

Good luck to all! For those that get accepted to Olin and turn down better known schools… be ready to defend, “the best little school you’ve never heard of”.

Thanks for posting the video, bay area mom. Nice to see some yellow dots among the Olin threads. I need little fixes like that to get me through to next week.
