Changing major after transfering???

Hi, I am currently an English major who just sent in all the apps to the UC's. At first I was planning on becoming a English teacher, but the closer I get to transfering, the more second thoughts I have about my career path. Im just wondering, how difficult would it be to change majors once I transfer? What if I want to go into something totally different like an R.N. (nursing)? What would I do then? Would I have to start all over?

What schools did you apply to?

i applied to basically every U.C. Tagged for davis, irvine, sb, sd, riverside

You might be able to switch majors but it wont be easy. All the lower division prereqs you did would be useless, and you would probably have to spend 3 years at the University finishing everything for the new major.

Nursing is a tough major to change to because it requires many science pre reqs to be done by junior year so you can do all the nursing classes junior and senior year. If you have the chem and anatomy done it wouldn’t be too hard. You’re probably better off getting your b.a and then doing a post grad nursing program. I know UCLA has one although I’m not sure of the details. If I find them I’ll let you know.

Very unlikely to change to be able to change majors to nursing. It is highly impacted at UCLA and UCI. There is always the option of doing an accelerated bachelors after you graduate or just go back to a CC that has a RN program.

Also I think if you get your bachelors and do a RN program at CC you are still eligible to apply to a masters or phd in nursing because you have your BA. (don’t quote me on that though)

No way for nursing. I have a friend at UCI with a 3.6/all prereqs done and he got denied a major change to nursing.

what if i wanted to change to something not so impacted? Like i dunno ill just throw something out there like…anthropology or whatever, would it be still hard to change major? The thing is im having second thoughts about being a teacher now. Its like im rethinking my whole future lol. If I do get a b.a. in english, can I got go for a masters in like business or nusing, or whatever later?

To get your masters in nursing you’ll have to go back and do a post grad program. There are a lot of them you just need to do a little research. I know for sure UCLA has one. I don’t really know anything about business.

Also changing your major to Anthro would be easy if you had the pre-reqs done. English is a good major though, you can do a lot of things with it other than teach. It’s very versatile.

Do you have a real passion for English or did you just choose it for no particular reason? My English teacher told me that you have to really want to do teaching, have a real passion for it, to pursue it.

Anyway, yeah English is great that way. It can apply to so many different fields for graduate studies. It’s one of the best undergraduate majors for law school. If you want to go into the medical field I would take as many science classes as possible while you take your English courses. I’ve heard of people going to medical school with an English degree, it’s just hard if you have taken no science classes such as biology and etc. for that kind of thing. Good luck on figuring out what you really love!
