I am thinking about changing my major from architecture to business. I have not yet been admitted into the university, but if I do decide to change before admission, I don't want to be stuck in the architecture school before being able to switch majors. I did put Business as my proposed "second choice." Is this possible? Would anyone recommend doing this?

There is one problem, though. In my applications for scholarships, I discussed my interest in architecture and how this interest applies to the program. Will switching, then, screw up any chance of getting these scholarships? I don't want to jeopardize that, either.

Is it possible to change majors after admission, but before classes begin? This would let me keep any scholarships I receive (lol) and my new major.

My D changed her major (and her schedule) after the first day of classes (from Engineering to Liberal Arts). Was a minimum of effort to accomplish.

I'd imagine it's not very encouraged, though, because the faculty members select you and count on you to be a valued member of that school. There aren't many merit programs available (the admissions website says only 1 full tuition and 5 partial tuition for architecture), so I think the school wants to have pride in the people they choose for those programs. It's kind of leading Wash U on by applying for and receiving an architecture scholarship because they rely on your passion and interest in that area. But, you CAN do it; I just personally think that if you accept the merit scholarshp and go to Wash U, that you should have some sort of moral obligation to continue being in that school and not switching out of it completely.

All the scholarships I am applying for are open to all disciplines. I did not apply for the Architecture one. Don't worry, jcool, I couldn't let myself get a scholarship for arch and then switch out of it.

Palmalk, thank you. It sounds like something I shouldn't worry about, then.

First, I don't really understand why, if you have so much interested in architecture (i.e., you wrote your scholarship essays about this) why you would want to suddenly change to business? I don't think you could get architecture scholarships and then switch to business because they seem specifically for the major...I'm not positive though.

However, you can certainly change majors before you hear back. I did it myself....I had originally put arts and sciences and then sent an e-mail to my WU counselor and she switched it to engineering for me. Quite easy.

I think you should just leave things as they stand now, and decide in the summer.

My D applied and was accepted into Architecture several years ago, applied for & received a partial architecture scholarship I believe in Feb. She chose to attend Wash U over several other schools, including full rides at several, but she loved Wash U. During the summer before freshman year, she decided she didn't want to major in architecture anymore. We were horrified, but said if she could figure a way to change majors & schools (to A&S) & still keep the scholarship, she had our blessings. Wash U was wonderful!! (They still are) She is now a junior - and has finally settled on a double major, and not sorry she dropped the whole arch. school. After seeing some of her friends working on their arch. & art projects, she is still glad she made that decision.
