Changing Major/School After Acceptance

How hard is it to change your major and school after you get accepted at UMD? I applied as a marketing major but now I'm basically 100% positive I want to major in economics at whatever school I go to. How hard/annoying will this be for me to change? I know the two are at different schools (Smith and Social Sciences) and am wondering if this will pose problems if I get accepted to UMD.

Also, does anyone have any information on the economics program at Maryland? I think its pretty highly regarded but was wondering if there were any econ majors who could tell me more about the program.

Transferring out of the business school is much easier than transferring in. I don't think econ is a limited enrollment program, so you should be fine.

IMO, if it is business you're interested in, you really should stay in the business school (change your concentration if marketing no longer interests you). Most economics classes have a much more theoretical focus than practical, and if you aren't truly interested in econ as a science/subject, you may not end up liking the major.

Right now I'm not completely sure what I want to do in or with the economics major but if it isnt too hard academically or administratively I would be interested in an econ-business double major. I know some schools have defined programs where you can do that and is it hard to double major in economics and a business major? Because I definitely would be fine with doing that. I guess if I pursued that it would be good that I applied to Smith considering that it is a LEP (and I think youre right that economics is not a LEP).

We don't have any sort of defined program, but considering that business majors have to take 4 econ classes, it would be one of the easier double-majors to do. You could knock out those requirements and your intro-levels and basic intermediate econ classes which would be prerequisites for the rest of your economics classes anyway. It's definitely doable.

Ok so now I got accepted and I have another question. I got into Smith and will definitely change my major to Finance, which I dont think will be a problem because its in the same school and while Smith is a LEP I dont think the majors are. Is there any way I could start out as a freshman at UMD as an Economics and Finance major? The two fields are pretty similar and have some overlap as far as what classes are needed to be taken. Basically, when I email UMD about switching my major could I possibly make it so I have two majors? All help is appreciated. I'll have some AP credit too if that makes things easier.

how do u no if you got into smith?

You can tell when you get your acceptance package. They give you a piece of paper with Maryland Planner at the top and it has your ID #, semester entering, and the college you got into is the last row.

Leibo-- Finance and Marketing are actually difficult majors to transfer into. As a freshman (try to talk to an advisor even before you get to UMD) you will probably have an easier time, but Smith students trying to change their business major to Finance or Marketing need a 3.5 GPA and are not guaranteed the switch.

Ask in your email if you can add economics as a second major. If not, go to the BSOS advisor when you get to UMD and add econ then.

CONGRATS!! :)

I have a question too about this in the same vein (sorry to hijack) – I was accepted to the College of Chemical and Life Sciences (at least, it was listed as my "college" on the Maryland Planer), as I put Chemistry as my major on my application. However, there's a very strong chance that I'll want to major in Physics instead, which is in a different college. I know it's definitely possible for me to choose to major in Physics instead, but how difficult/complicated would it be?

I have to admit, I really don't understand this system too well... every other school I applied to is private and isn't divided into colleges like this. What does it really mean to be accepted to one of the colleges?

Adaman-- It means nothing, really, just that your major of choice happens to be a part of that college.

I'm not sure about Physics' status as a Limited Enrollment Program major. If it's not, you should have no problem transferring into it. There's more paperwork and red tape if you're switching to a major in a different college but technically it should not be hard for you to "get in".

Thanks! 10char

really changing your major is easy within the business school. Honestly as a freshman it doesn't matter what major you are if you are in the business school. You won't take any different classes.

If you are interested in business, stay in the school. Most people choose econ as their major only after being declined to the business school. Many people double in them. DEFINITELY DEFINITELY DEFINITELY stay in the business school till you are ABSOLUTELY sure of what you want to do. There REALLY is no reason to switch right now. If you want to get back into the business school it could be hard. A lot of people stress about getting into the business school. Getting in as a freshman is such a load off your back.
