Hello CC community, I am a high school senior and I have recently applied to CMU for Stats/ML major in Dietrich College, but I have recently been reading about Informations Systems major at CMU and I started to like it a lot. Is it possible to change my major after I have applied to CMU if both of the majors are in Dietrich? And if it is possible, is it going to somehow my admissions chances if I decided to change my major? Thanks a lot!
Not sure about Dietrich and those two majors but MCS, Engineering, and SCS all admit freshmen to the school/college not to a specific program. Freshmen in those schools pick a major spring term.
You should contact the school directly and ask. Generalizations about other colleges, other majors, etc. may not be relevant in certain situations. And this is one of them.
“ All Dietrich College students enter into the university undeclared, with the exception of Information Systems majors.”
This tells me that the rules for the IS major are likely different than all others.
IS admissions statistics are called out separately, with a much lower acceptance rate than DC (6% vs. 14%). Average test scores are also slightly higher.
@schoolapplicant123 — IS has a limited number of seats. While they do accept some transfers it depends on availability and academic performance the first year. If you’re dead set on IS you might call to see if you can change the preference on your application but as another poster noted, it’s not an easy program to get into.
