Changing Majors (Arch Engineering to Architecture)

Would this be a difficult transition? Any information would be nice.

I’m not an expert on this but I think changing from ARCE to Architecture will not be difficult since they are both in the same College, as long as you maintain a good GPA (not sure what the minimum is, either 2.0 or 3.0). Remember that the Architecture major is a minimum 5-year program, whereas you can possibly finish ARCE in 4 years. My daughter, the ARCE, knows people who are attempting to transfer from Arch to ARCE, and vice versa. It’s also better to transfer sooner than later, since you’ll be getting into your major-specific courses in your 2nd year. You should talk to an Arch major and find out how much time and work is involved - you shouldn’t make this decision lightly. From what I hear, Arch is one of the most demanding time-intensive majors at Cal Poly.

You’re sure you want to be an architect rather than an engineer? I was an ArchE major (UT-Austin) and am now a structural engineer. The architects we know in our area are really struggling, but engineers are holding their own. Even in a down economy, people need help with structural problems, but architects aren’t used as much.

We had a national ArchE student convention when I was at UT, and we hosted a couple of nice guys from your school! This was many, many years ago.

i was just at poly and i was able to speak to the faculty of the arch department. they said it is not impossible to switch majors and it is relatively easy if you are switching form one majors to another major from the same department as long as you meet the requirements.
