Changing Majors as a Freshman

I’m going to be applying to UCLA as a theatre major, but I’m not entirely sure that I’ll stick with it once I’m there. It’s very difficult to find and keep a job in that field once you go out into the work force and I’m still trying to decide if I will stay in school for it. If I choose not to, will I be able to switch majors? I would most likely go into either anthropology or history, and I would likely keep a minor in theatre if I could.

It is easy to switch from theater to any major in L&S. You just need to meet pre reqs. It is harder to get into TFT than it is to get into L&S since they admit by major. Something to consider.

Some other things to consider: The application process for theater is rigorous (involving an audition/portfolio review/interview/etc. depending on your area of focus), the acceptance rate is significantly lower than L&S, and I’m unsure if the classes you take as a theater freshman will fulfill any GE requirements for a L&S major. I also believe you can only get into the theater major as a freshman or as a junior transfer from a community college, so that’s definitely something to note.

If your heart is in theater, I say 100% go for it!! But if you have serious doubts, the theater minor is also a really good option. Just some stuff to think about!
