Hi, I applied to UC Berkeley for mechanical engineering. If I get in, how difficult would it be (and what is the process) for me to change to computer science?
Within CoE: http://engineering.berkeley.edu/academics/majors-minors/change-major , though EECS probably has higher standards than the baselines described because of its popularity.
For L&S CS: https://eecs.berkeley.edu/academics/undergraduate/cs-ba after changing to L&S as described at https://ls.berkeley.edu/advising/academic-progress/changing-status/change-college-ls
Best would be to follow the curriculum for your ME major, but add in CS 61A, 61B, 70. You can apply to switch to EECS (no assurance of admission); if your grades in those CS courses are high enough, you can also switch to L&S and then declare L&S CS.
My son got in as ME major.
He was told that once he completed two CS classes with 3.3 GPA, and then he could declare EECS as second major.
He’s now pursuing double major at Berkeley.
- Taking the courses for your desired new major
- Having at least 3.0 - 3.5 preferred
- Compelling personal statement if necessary.
