We are beyond grateful our son was admitted to UCLA c/o 2021. It’s as an English major, so he is wondering about the likelihood of being able to change majors when he gets there. He may be more interested in Business Econ, but it looks like that is a very in-demand major.
Also, is there pressure to make his commitment before May 1 and start his housing applications early?
thank you for any advice and best wishes to all families!
How do I get into the Business Economics major?
To apply for the Business Economics major, applications are available via the Undergraduate Economics Counseling CCLE website and are accepted during the first three weeks of each quarter.
You must complete all pre-major courses with a minimum 3.0 GPA and a “C” or higher in each course to apply for the major.
Non-transfer students must also earn a 3.3 Primary Score to get accepted into the major. To determine your eligibility for the major view the Primary Score Calculator and input your grades. All pre-major grades must be accounted for in order for the calculator to work, thus, please be sure to include projected grades if you have not completed the pre-major. You must also input your cumulative UCLA GPA and total units completed. The total units must be less than 135.
Transfer students can qualify for Business Economics by either:
Completing Economics 11 and 101 with a minimum 3.5 GPA and a 3.3 cumulative UCLA GPA.
– OR –
Completing Economics 11 and 101 with a minimum 3.3 GPA and a minimum 3.5 GPA in Econ 11, 101 and all Econ courses taken by the time Econ 101 is completed (they must have at least Economics 11 as a prerequisite) and a 3.3 cumulative UCLA GPA.

Housing: As long as the application is received by May 1, your son should be fine.
Freshmen students admitted for Fall Quarter 2017 are guaranteed three consecutive years of on campus single student housing if:
The student’s housing application and non refundable $30 fee are received prior to 4 p.m., May 1, 2017.
The student’s Statement of Intent to Register is submitted to the Admissions Office on time.
The student’s initial housing payment and all remaining payments are made by the deadlines stated in the online housing offer.
The student resides in UCLA Housing and agrees to the terms and conditions stated in the 2017-2018 Academic Year Contract.
keep in mind frosh are not admitted to the econ or biz-econ majors. They are listed as “pre-econ” which means exactly nothing. They still have to complete all the requirements and apply to the major, just like your son. So he is at no disadvantage compared to anyone else.
