Changing Majors at UCLA

I was recently admitted to UCLA as an Asian American Studies major, and I'm interested in switching to a more practical major such as Political Science or History. I also want to declare a minor in a science related field. Is this possible?

not possible for poli sci or history, both impacted.
I suggest you go to the UCLA website and look at all majors that aren't impacted. There is no loophole around getting into impacted majors, nothing legal anyways.

You can apply to add a double major. That is easier but still hard. I am thinking about adding Econ and that is very hard to do.

Econ will not approve you to double if you did not get into ECON to begin with unless you have very compelling reasons and had the grades + gpa to get in when you originally applied- you need the approval of the department chair. It is highly unlikely to happen.

Based on UCLA polisci website you can change majors to poli sci. It doesnt say that they will not allow you to change once at UCLA. All poli sci majors enters UCLA are Pre Poli sci- if you complete the requirements and fill out the petition they should allow the change.

But Effective of FALL 2009 for poli sci they will NOT allow you to change.
So you would have to complete all the requiremens prior to that date to change.

I can not find anything that says History will not allow you to change into the major either.

hm effective Fall 2009? I only have one pre-req for Poli Sci completed, and if I complete all of the pre-reqs in one semester at UCLA does that mean I can officially declare the major the following semester?

Also, does UCLA have a unit-cap limit? Is it possible for transfers to stay and graduate in 3 years rather than 2?

Maximum Units
Double Major

wow don't listen to what he said.

THIS IS COMING DIRECTLY FROM THE UCLA SITE.

Political Science*

To be considered for this major, all of the preparatory courses listed here must be completed by the spring before transfer.

*Demand for this major significantly exceeds space available. You must be admitted directly into this major; you will not be able to change to this major after admission to UCLA. Students are classified as pre-political science until they complete the preparation courses.

I REPEAT, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CHANGE INTO POLI SCI.
Save your time and look into something else

Go to assist.org It says effective FALL 2009

You can petition using assist. org. Poli Sci is not NEARLY as strict as econ.

where do you see that on the poli scie website to begin with Trebor??

Undergraduate Major — Political Science

I know where you found that- it is is not on the department website though and it is not on assist.org. If you go in first quarter and petition for pre poli sci status you have a pretty good chance of having it approved. You can even petition with a copy of assist .org from your CC to UCLA as a backup. You are finding that on the Prospective student website.

I would also like to point out that you can in all reality with enough compelling reasons change into any major. I was math/econ and wanted to change just to econ and was told that if i had xyz i could do it- but i didnt have xyz done and i didnt care enough to pursue it further. .. if you bother enough people you can change into the most impacted of majors. You just have to have people on your side.

wow malishka, stop giving this guy false information.
THAT INFORMATION DOES NOT APPLY TO TRANFERS.

It's freakin' cut and dry right here
https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/lsmajors/pos-pre.htm

i can't believe you don't even know where to find it, I guess it makes sense because you don't even know the general rules of changing majors

I talked to a counselor for econ and I am sure its the same for poli-sci if you want to double major. Since you are not changing your major "You do not have to petition for a change of major" all you have to do is file the paperwork to be aloud to do a double major. Than you apply to Econ or Poli science and they look at you as an internal applicant ( :) ). She told me that they will look mainly at my pre-reqs, my UC GPA,
The below requirements to be admitted to the major as listed for transfer applicants on the ECON website.
and 1. A minimum 3.5 GPA in Econ 11 and 101 and a 3.3 cumulative UCLA GPA.
or
2. Have a minimum 3.3 GPA in Econ 11 and 101 and a 3.5 GPA in Econ 11, 101 and all Econ courses taken by the time Econ 101 is completed (must have Econ 11 as a prerequisite) and a 3.3 minimum cumulative UCLA GPA.
You have to take Econ 41 as well.

Also it can not hurt to try to change you major entirely to political science. Do not listen to anyone just right a compelling reason and they will consider it. They just do not want everyone applying to what is considered an easy major and when admitted changing it to a harder one. Makes sense right?

Trebor do you even go to UCLA?

I have first hand experience with the red tape there- they can say whatever they want, doesnt mean jack- you can go around ANYTHING with compelling reasons.

And also, the information on the POLITICAL SCIENCE department website does apply to transfers!!!!!!!!!! It has a transfer section.

You are looking at the PROSPECTIVE STUDENT ADMISSIONS WEBSITE! If you go to assist.org and look one CC to UCLA it says EFFECTIVE FALL 2009

would it be possible to switch to communication studies?

^impacted

Unless your admitted to communication major you can't switch into it.

wrong again. It is possible but once again you need to double major. You first need to complete 2 upper division classes in communications and the prereqs. and than apply as a double major and you will be an internal applicant which if you do good at ucla than it will be easy to get into. Just talk to a ucla counselor.

I think you would be better off in a communications minor if they offer it (I am not sure if they do) because communications as a major is not that useful. Most people that are communications majors will argue that. Do not get me wrong its a great skill to have but its really only good if you pair it up with something related to the field you want to do. Journalism, Political Science, ect. ect.

ok thanks ;-)

lol ok then you guys go ahead and pick up anohter major your JUNIOR year and see how that goes for you.

Trebor, i picked another major junior year and finished in 4 quarters total. I did 3- and have 1 left b/c i moved out of state.

Malishka, what did you change majors to?

... obviously picking up another major isn't hard if you ditch your old one. I was talking about DOUBLE majoring, which is totally a dumb move starting your junior year.
