Most of us know how people exaggerate the difficulty of changing majors at cal poly. I hear that it’s not a problem changing majors within your college but is difficult changing into a different college.
The requirements say that a student must complete a quarter at cal poly and take specific classes and maintain a certain gpa. Sounds simple enough.
So my question is, if a student who is originally accepted into say the college of agriculture but want to change into science or engineering and they maintain a 3.5 gpa in the specific courses required, would they be eligible to change or is it more complicated?

Definitely possible. I know people who have done it. Just do everything they want you to do. Sometimes though, they’ll have you take the intro class for the major you wish to switch into and you have to get at least a certain grade in order to get into the major. This can be a challenge depending on what major you want to switch into since some intro classes are quite difficult.

Yeah that’s what I thought. People make it sound like its impossible but there has to be way

Yeah, it’s definitely not impossible. Idk why they make it seem like it’s so hard, probably to discourage people from doing it. But that kinda turns some people off from attending the school completely.

As a current Cal Poly student, I can tell you that people over exaggerate the difficulty of changing majors. I know many, many of my friends have done it. Changing within colleges is a breeze. Changing from college to college is hardly any more difficult. Basically if you meet the qualifications (i.e. you didn’t get in with a 2.7 gpa to a very easy major and now want to be a business or engineering major), all you have to do is meet with someone, have some paperwork filled out, take classes that will ready you for that major, and if you maintain a certain GPA (different for every major), you’re in. Easy, right?

Difficult or impossible to switch major is the number one item on the list as a con.

I guess we will get more information on the admitted student day.

@deeper are you saying that they review your high school records before allowing a change?
And also i have some examples i would like to be evaluated if you would be so kind.
Agribusiness–> agri engineering
Same college

College of ag–> college of science/math
Different college

Agri engineering–> civil engineering
Different college, similiar major

If one maintains a 4.0 gpa for their first couple quarters, will all of these be possible?

I believe they look at the last two quarters taken at Cal Poly. If you get a 4.0 GPA in both quarters, your chances of changing majors increases greatly. It also depends on how impacted the major is too. For example, I heard that if you want to change into kinesiology (which is highly impacted), you would have to talk to the department chair. She would only accept 10 requests and you would have to write a whole page about why you would like to change your major. On the other hand, if you want to switch into a major like biology (which is not as impacted as majors like engineering), you wouldn’t need to write a paper. Instead, you would talk to the head department and then take a couple of classes (like Bio 161, Bio 162, Chem, etc).

It is easier to switch majors in the same college. I had a friend who wanted to switch from one engineering major to another. She turned in her application form and a week later, her application was processed and her major was changed immediately.

I’m not exactly sure, but if you want to switch from agricultural engineering to civil engineering, the application process may be a bit longer because they are in different colleges. However, it may be easier to switch from agricultural to civil than it is from liberal arts to civil engineering. With agricultural and civil engineering, they may have some courses that overlap such as calculus I, II, III, etc.
