I'm currently a senior majoring in biology. My intention was to go to pharmacy school but after thinking about it for a long time and gaining experience in the field, I decided not to do it. Instead I want to change to engineering. Do you think the school would let me change since I'm so far into my biology degree already? I thought about graduate school too but I would have to finish up math requirements. On top of that it might be difficult for me to get recommendation letters for engineering. I would like to get an internship but majoring in biology and having no engineering experience is also a problem.

You need to talk with your academic advisor. If you’ve taken any federal financial aid, you have to show progress toward degree completion (i.e. you have a limit on the maximum amount of credit hours). This all gets a bit complicated (based on your personal situation), so please see an advisor.

You may find your best option is taking the math/physics/eng classes, before you graduate, and then entering grad school. Using BME as an example:

[Entrance Requirements | www.bme.ufl.edu](http://www.bme.ufl.edu/academics/admissions/entrancerequirements)

You likely need to take the following classes:

3 Courses of Calculus
1 Course of Differential Equations
2 Courses of Physics with Calculus

Plus the three more “Engineering” classes in areas like Engineering materials or thermodynamics.

UF “may” allow you to take some of these classes, while you’re a grad student. Once again, talk with your advisor (and the advisor in BME, if that’s the field you’re interested in…).

Good Luck!

Thanks. I’ll get with my advisor this week

Well I talked to some advisors and they said I couldn’t change over to mechanical engineering. They said I had too many credit hours already and I only finished 3 of the 8 tracking courses that they would want me to have. Don’t know what to do now. I was considering graduate engineering school but I think my chances of getting in would be very slim and I wouldn’t be prepared. I would be required to take those 8 tracking courses which are mostly math and that would be the only base I would have for engineering. I think it would be difficult to get an internship or experience since I’m not an engineering major.

Your next assignment! Talk with an advisor in the BME department (if that’s what you’re interested in…). He/she can tell you want they require and how competitive the program is, and some info on internships and such. “Really” find out if this is something you would want to make a sacrifice, in time and money, to pursue.

At the end of the day, this change may not be for you, or it may be something you delay for a few years…

Good Luck!
