hello, i'm just wondering how flexible it is to change majors @ UCs as listed from your app. say, you put undeclared/social sciences on the app but later you change your mind to undeclared/fine arts (i'm actually deciding between those two for davis). or you declare a specific major but change your mind to undeclared or another major for the UC you're going to attend. or undeclared to undeclared/something and vice versa. hard to change?

i'm mostly wondering about SD, irvine, and davis.

You can switch majors as many times as you want, and its as easy as filling out a piece of paper that says "I want to change my major from X to Y". The UC doesn't even look at the major you put on your application.

Yes of course. Basically all you'd be changing is your declared major. For most majors, you are only a pre-major until you finish the pre-reqs for that major and officially enter that major.

at many uc schools it is not difficult to change a major within a college (such as letters and science) but quite difficult to change into a different college in high demand (such as engineering or, at uc's that have them separate, the fine arts college). If I was the OP I would call the advisor for fine arts at the schools you are looking at and see if it is easy or hard to switch. At UCLA, for example, theater arts is in big demand and you just can't switch into it.

As far as uc's not looking at the major on your app. that's not true. There are different standards for those applying to engineering, letters and science, and so on.

Engineering is definitely looked at differently (in fact, i'd bet they have a separate adcom) - same for theatre. But within Letters and Science, which accounts for the vast majority of students, the major you put down on your app is not even taken into account.

At UCI it's not too hard, but there are some exceptions. You can switch into most majors, but I think the exceptions are Engineering, Social Sciences, and Information & Computer Science (ICS). With Engineering and ICS, I think they need to look at your math background before they allow a switch, and usually Social Sciences is too busy during the summer to do any major changes until the school year has already started.

you can switch into any major provided that its not impacted then it might be a little harder cause getting in also means your gonna have to have a high gpa.

You have a pretty big window of time to switch, but if you decide during your fourth year that you want to switch, I'm pretty sure that they'll say no. You can probably switch without too much trouble any time during the first two years and maybe even early on in the third year. The process can take time, depending on if you have met the prerequisites. You might decide that you want to switch to a certain major during your freshman year, but if that major requires you to first take x amount of classes, then you can't officially switch until you've done so. But once all of the paperwork and stuff is taken care of on your end, it probably shouldn't take too much more than a few weeks depending on how busy the school's counseling office is.

However there is one thing to always keep in mind at a large college like the UC system. Counselors and advisors can only tell you what the rules are. However deans can waive the rules. If you have a reasonable request and a well thought out argument for your request, they can change the rule.

Actually at UCDavis the limit is 225 not 216, and yes most classes are 4 units, but there are exceptions, a lot of the lab class in chem and life sciences are more than 4 units. Also classes without a discussion section are only 3 units normally.
