So I'm currently a high school junior in Cali, now looking into community college, then transfer to a Cal State... Can you still change your major if you transfer into a 4 year after starting at a CC? Like if I majored in Hospitality at CC, but decided to do Business at a 4 year later (only an example)? Really indecisive about majors right now... Would I have to stick with whatever I chose?

Yes, but depending on what school you choose you may have to take some lower level classes first before you can go into the major.

So would it affect my chances of transferring to a 4 year if they see that I want to change my major?

You can change your major, but they would only care if you have the required classes for the major done. They wouldn’t reject you because you changed your major, but they might if you didn’t take the required classes for that major. I have heard of liberal arts majors at a community college later doing nutrition for their 4 year degree, but they took the required science courses for nutrition.

You don’t need to stick with whatever you choose, but it may decrease the time you spend in school if you know your major right away. If you do change your major, it would make the most sense to switch to a similar major that has most of the same required classes, and if not you’d need the additional classes that are required. I hope that made sense. I was reluctant to change my major from psychology to nutrition only because I knew it would take me longer to transfer since I needed about 7 specific additional courses before I could transfer.

Your example of switching from hospitality to business would probably work, but the most important thing for you to know is that different 4 year schools may require different courses. The classes required for nutrition majors at UC Davis, Sacramento State and San Francisco State are all very different.

By the way assist.org is a great resource to see what California community college classes transfer to CSU’s and UC’s in California, and also to see the classes that you should complete for a specific major before transferring. Using assist, I’d suggest that you check the requirements of the different majors you are interested at different schools, and you can see if any courses are the same or not.
