My first quarter of college I realized that engineering would not be right for me. I ended up with a 2.60 cumulative GPA after getting a 2.4 in Chem I and 1.8 in Calc II. Now, I switched to business and am doing better. I ended the quarter with a 3.79 GPA bring my cumulative GPA to a 3.23. My pre-requisite GPA for business is a 3.70 (with one financial accounting class to take). However, the thing is admissions into the business department at my school is very competitive. The early admissions group has a 25% acceptance rate and the normal admissions group has a 41% acceptance rate. The average cumulative GPA of accepted applicants is a 3.60 while the pre-requisite GPA is a 3.71. My pre-requisite GPA is fine but my cumulative is not because of Chem I and Calc II. How worried should I be about getting admitted?

That’s a conversation to have with an academic adviser at your own university. We can tell you about the situation at our own universities, but what good what that do you?

Normal admissions seems like a good bet. Gives you more time to raise your GPA. Though, it is quantitatively impossible to raise a 2.6 to a 3.6 in one or two quarters. Can you wait 'til next year’s normal admissions cycle, which would give you, what, 4 quarters? I don’t know how your school’s schedule looks like, but this could be an option.

Yes, the next time I can apply is spring of my sophomore year for fall quarter. But generally, do colleges consider improvement especially in courses not required for their department? If I took out the Chem I and Calc II classes I would have a 3.75 cumulative GPA along with my 3.70 pre-requisite GPA. I am also expecting to get a 3.5+ this quarter.

My suggestion is this: Do well from here on out, take your transcript to the advisor/dean/whoever’s in charge, and try to see what they think. As was stated before, we cannot possibly know how each individual school’s administration operates, so you’ll only be able to get general advice on here.

Also, I think things would be a lot better if you can make that 3.5 more along the lines of 3.7ish+, to give yourself a stronger boost. Good luck.
