How difficult is it to change majors within the college of engineering at cal poly slo? Specifically from civil to mechanical?
Thanks!
Should be no problem as long as your mca points would of been high enough to get you into the major you want to switch to when you applied and you keep your gpa up. My son is switching from chemistry to biomedical engineering. He said they have made some changes this year to make the process easier. The first thing they had him do was fill out some paperwork to see if he would of been accepted into the major in the first place. It only took a few days to get his answer.
They are making it easier, but it isn’t easy or guaranteed, especially into ME or Aero. The info you need is linked below.

Certainly don’t want to give any misinformation out but my son was told at the workshop he went to that if he met the gpa requirements and would of got the admit in the first place he could switch to any major he wanted. He filled out the application and was told he would of been accepted to any major he wanted. Maybe they were not clear enough about the process at the workshop or misinformed him but that’s what he was told.
I think it’s easier than it used to be and revolves around several factors, mainly if your original MCA would have gotten you into the desired major, if you meet the GPA and have taken the prerequisite classes, and there space. It may be even easier now, but that document is the most recent revised policy published 2015. As always, the best way to know for sure is to ask the ME department.
