Changing Majors Within Engineering School

I was accepted into the engineering school but my first choice major (mechanical engineering was full); I was fine with this though because I simply chose industrial engineering and thought I would transfer after freshman year since they are both Track A.

My interest has recently been sparked in petroleum engineering though so how difficult would it be to transfer from industrial engineering to petroleum engineering (Track A to Track C) following freshman year?

I know the engr 111/112 classes would be different and that I would have missed out on taking PETE 201 my freshman year but is it still doable? Or should I maybe just continue pursuing my bs in mechanical engineering and then pursue a masters in petroleum engineering?

Thanks

Since you will be consider as currently enrolled student next year, you fall into the category mention above. For S2, it was not difficult. He obtained the approval and signatures from the advisors of both departments, filed the form and that was it. The criteria base on your cumulative GPA and opening slot. The freshman curriculum are very similar in majority of the engineering major. However, if you come in with many AP credits like my S2, you may have push yourself further along credit and courses into partially Sorphomore year. If you decided to change do it by 2nd year and not later. Review the curriculum of both majors and if possible rearrange and watch out prerequisite. Best wishes.

Thanks for the info. I’m guessing S2 = your second son? The only credits I will have are for ENGL 104 and HIST 105; possibly by the time I transfer HIST 106 if I can take it during the winter at Blinn.

Did you son have to go back and take PETE 201? His engr 111/112 that were track A were also fine?

TXAggie92,
Are you in Blinn or are you already admitted into “Dwight Look College of Engineering of TAMU-CS”? We have no experience of Blinn set up therefore no comments. All facts mentions are for “internal change” apply to students already in the school of engineering. S2 did not have to repeat anything, he change from CSE to EE and we have no experience with PETE. Since it is a policy of the Engineering department, very likely it will be similar for all majors within the school boundary. Talk to the adviser of both departments prior your transfer and they will direct you. Best wishes.

No you do not have to go take track C if you took track A already. Changing the major really only depends on whether you meet the gpa requirement and space like ucla said.

Alright let me throw one more question at you real quick. ENGL 104 is a CBK course but I took it at a community college this summer and received an A. I know regularly transferred courses don’t count towards your GPA but what about when they’re evaluating your CBK courses for transfer?

The only information I can find for this comes from the Mechanical Engineering Department’s site. For some reason, I get the feeling they have a lot of transfers into their department. Here is what ME says in regards to your question:

PetE may have the same standards (I would have a hard time believing that they wouldn’t).
