Changing majors

Hey guys I'm going to be a freshman in the upcoming school year. I applied and got in to UIUC as ElecE major but I was thinking about changing to Comp Sci because I realized I wanted to work with computers more and I like software more than hardware (hence, skipping over CompE). When would be the soonest available opportunity to change my major?

From advising website(I have heard rumors that transferring into CS is harder that what it says below, but I’m not sure if the rumors are true)

https://agora.cs.illinois.edu/display/undergradProg/Transferring+into+CS+from+other+UIUC+departments

Before attempting to transfer, students should complete the following courses:

* CS 125 and CS 173

 • MATH 220 or 221 and MATH 231
 • CHEM 102 and 103
 • At least one course from Physics sequence (PHYS 211, 212 and either 213 or 214)

Students should receive a grade of at least B-minus in all required CS and Math courses and maintain at least a B-minus average overall. If a student meets the above requirements, then he/she should visit the College of Engineering Office of Academic Programs in 206 Engineering Hall and pick up a petition to transfer.

FYI, the first two ECE courses at UIUC, ECE 110 and ECE 190 are weeder courses, which means that it is hard to do well in those courses and they are very time consuming, especially if you prefer software. You may want to consider avoiding ECE 110 and ECE 190.

You cannot change majors until at the earliest after first year. As noted above you need to take those CS courses that CS majors would take in freshman year (all the other courses noted you take as an ECE major anyway). You need the minimum grade requirements noted and transfer is not guaranteed even if you have them because it ultimately depends on number of open spaces available in comparison to number who request transfer and the higher your grades the better your chances.

Would it be too ambitious to want to take ECE 110 and CS 125 in the same semester? (freshman year). Idk what else to fill up the time with considering my electives, Chem 102, Rhet 105, and Calc I/II are done because of APs/SATs…

You still need to take Physics 211,212, and 213/214, Chem 103, and Calc III before graduation. Even if you are done with all your gen-eds/electives, take a relaxing class or two unrelated to CS/ECE.

Check the requirements for CS/ECE below and see if you are missing any classes.

Also, you can try generating an audit on your degree by following the link, but it may not work since you haven’t signed up for classes yet and UIUC may not have your AP scores.
