Changing majors

I'm about to start my freshman year in college as a Psychology major. However I've been seriously considering changing to a theatre major. I've been in 4 plays and stage managed 2. If I do switch majors I probably want to transfer to another school that focuses more on theatre (where I'm going now is more medically focused).

Is it hard to transfer as a theatre major?

Is it possible to get a BA in psych (or something else) and then get a M(F)A in theatre/acting/directing/stage managing/etc? Will I have the same opportunities as a person with a BA in theatre?

Thank you

I understand your concern. I’m thinking about changing my major as well but the other way around. I’m thinking about changing my theater to French or writing and here’s why. Only a select few makes it into the acting business. I know it’ll be hard for me to get a job if i’m not a part of that select few. Then again the same goes for everything else.

I love theater with a passion and I want to try and I have the determination to study hard and see where it can take me. Then again, I know that there’s a possibility that I won’t make it, so how will I make a living? I might end up taking theater as a minor.

Few actors studied in Drama and dedicated their lives to it successfully (i.e. Tina Fey, Meryl Streep, Angela Bassett, Kate Winslet [drama school] etc.). A lot of actors didn’t even major or minor in Drama and have still succeeded (i.e. Natalie Portman, Gerard Butler, Leonard Nemoy, etc.), though some of them were already in the business and just figured, “just in case I can’t find another movie/tv show” or “I want to learn something more” and then there are those who dropped out of college to pursue and still succeeded (i.e. James Franco [is currently back and going to 5 schools simultaneously and has a writing degree now], Johnny Depp, Adam Sandler, etc)

EDIT: It’s not hard to transfer since you haven’t started yet. It’s just one is more time consuming then the other. Talk to your school about that and see what they think. MFA is a masters in theater. You get that after completing your BA. Unless you double major you can get them both at the same time and see which one you want to pursue a masters in. Again, talk to your school and see what they say. Have you ever thought about minoring in theater?
