If I get accepted to a school, but I want to change majors, how difficult will it be?

Unless you’re trying to change INTO something like Engineering, a field that uses auditions/portfolios, etc., it’s usually not much of a problem. With some exceptions, most students don’t have to declare a major until the end of soph year.

If you give the majors you’re thinking about, people might be able to give you more specific information.

Depends on the school and what majors you want to switch into. Some schools like Columbia and Carnegie Mellon have separate schools and transferring from a major in the school you were accepted to to a major in another of that university’s schools can be very difficult. It’s all relative.

It depends on the school and the major.

Typically, if the major is at full capacity at the school, changing into it may be restricted and require applying into a competitive admission process. What majors these are differ at each school.

Of course, one must also have been taking any needed prerequisite courses to be ready to enter the new major. For example, changing into the physics major in the fourth semester after having taken no physics or math courses means that on-time graduation is unlikely, due to prerequisite sequencing.

I’m thinking about doing the same thing, but since I read that I can still get a job in my field of choice; I might just try to make my desired major my minor instead. :)
