Changing majors

Hello everyone! I was just admitted to the journalism program at Northeastern University. I applied as a journalism major, but between the time when I submitted my app and now, I took a biology class and absolutely loved it. I would like to change my major to biology. on the MyNeu page, I can submit a request. My questions are, what should I say in the notes part, what are the odds of my major being changed, and will they rescend my admission/ grant money if I do not have the scores/gpa for this program? Thank you.

Bumping this up because I have the same question.

I do not believe they would rescind your admission or your scholarship. If you were looking to switch into a program with more competitive admissions, you might not be able to change, but they wouldn’t kick you out for wanting to change. Changing majors is a relatively common aspect of college. If you give a strong reasoning (and your reasoning sounds good to me) as to why you want to switch, I anticipate that it won’t be a problem.

I don’t know how it works this early on, but once you’re in college, though, your often have to have taken certain classes in a major in order to officially change to it (because they want to make sure you know what you’re getting into). You might try contacting admissions or your academic advisor.

Definitely definitely definitely fill out the request on myneu. It might even help to email the Bio advisors or admissions, etc (it can’t hurt).

There are a lot of people who switch majors, especially within the original “CAS” colleges. But the problem is that a lot of tough majors are very hard to catch up on once you’ve been here a while-- Bio is one of them. So if you can get switched over to Bio before you choose your classes, meaning you won’t fall behind at all, it will be a major benefit for you.

Yea I will try to fill out a request. They emailed me back saying it won’t affect my admission or aid status. However, if my request doesn’t go through, I plan on changing the first year I am there so I do not fall behind. Thank you all for the great answers by the way!

My request was accepted, thank you!

That’s great that they got back to you so quickly. Happy for you!
