Changing Majors

Hi,
I was admitted to Cal Poly and my major is environmental science. I want to change it to biomedical engineering, but I know that the engineering department is really competitive and hard to switch into, so my request to change majors may get denied. Does my major request even stand a chance? I want to go to Cal Poly as my first choice, but I’m really worried that my request will get denied.

You can’t change until after you’ve attended and jumped through a few hoops. Even then, it isn’t guaranteed. Below is everything you need to know.

Yeah, I’ve looked at the Cal Poly website and I understand that it’s not necessarily guaranteed. I guess my question was more about how often are major requests turned down? And since mine is a more difficult major change, I think my odds already might not be as good. But thank you! I’ll keep researching and see if I can make a decision.

Major changes are denied only if you don’t meet gpa requirements

Engineering is the biggest exporter of students at Cal Poly, so spaces usually open up. The biggest thing is you need not only good grades, but also to take certain classes. You will be blocked into your schedule as a Freshman and likely, based on your current major, NOT into the classes you’ll need for BME. Get it changed during WOW. Good luck. Here’s the specific BME link.
