Changing Majors

My son has been accepted to Cockrell for EE/Computer Engineering. He is excited but like any 18 year old he is not completely sure about his major. Any thoughts on how easy/hard it is to change majors at U of T - either within engineering or to other U of T schools?

Changing majors within Cockrell should be straight forward. This is because freshman take a lot of the same courses regardless of major, so if you switch in the first year you haven’t lost any/or much time. Switching into a different college is harder. The freshman courses & pre-requisites vary, so the student likely will fall behind. For example McCombs will want 2 semesters of Calc (which should be ok for an engineering major since they take it anyway), 2 semesters of Economics, and another course which escapes me at this point. I don’t think Engineering majors take Economics, so thats 3 courses that the student will have to take before they can apply. Plus they will need good grades for McCombs. My son figured out early in the first semester he wanted out of CS and wanted to get into McCombs instead. He switched his courses around to add the pre-requisite courses he needed and dropped his CS curriculum. It was an all or nothing approach that worked since he got almost straight A’s and got in. His fallback would have been an Economics major.

I’m thinking you are asking about the possibility of changing his major now?

I was thinking about when he is attending starting Fall 17. I learned that they will offer accepted students a chance change/confirm their major in March.

I just re-read your reply. Was there a specific reason your son wanted out of CS?
