i was wondering how easy it is to change majors at JHU, i.e changing from a IR major to a BME

You can freely switch into any major you want except for BME, you have to apply to that program

do you have to go through the BME program at hopkins to get into their med school?

Definitely not - you can major in absolutely anything and still apply to med school as long as you take certain pre-med requirements. Hopkins doesn't have any guaranteed Medical School admissions program.

original question:
Hopkins students are not admitted to a specific major but rather admitted to the University. This allows our students the opportunity to select any program of study and change their minds. Engineering students declare their major at the end of their first year, whereas Arts & Sciences students declare their major by the end of their second year.

As spe07 stated, the exception to this policy is the BME program. You must apply directly to the BME program during the application process and must be admitted directly into that program. Therefore, no you can not switch from IR to BME upon enrolling at Hopkins - the only students in BME are those admitted directly into the major.

second question:
Absolutely not. tanman is correct as usual -- to apply to medical school (whether that be Hopkins or any med school) you need to complete the pre-health advising track. You can choose to major in any program of study. BME is not a program where all students go on to medical school -- it is an Engineering major.
