Changing Majors

I am applying to WashU ED, but I applied under arts and sci (minor in art) but now I want to switch to majoring in art.
Is it too late to switch now, because decisions come out so soon?
If I get in and write to them asking to switch majors, would they have to reconsider my application?
Thanks.

You should call and ask them, since you'd need to be accepted to the Art school for that (instead of art/sci). I am sure you could switch later as well, once you are a student, but it will be better to know for sure from them.

Don’t worry now, once you get assigned your advisor, talk to him about transferring and he would do it for you. My BF started in A&S and he is now majoring in photography in the Art school.

If you have a portfolio, and you are proud of it, I would suggest that you send it to the School of Art and indicate that you are considering it as your primary school. I do not have any proof, but my guess is that it is "easier" to get in the School of Art because there are fewer qualified applicants. I think the mix of art talent and academic talent is less common than pre-business, pre-engineering, pre-law, etc... Therefore, perhaps a better chance.

If you do not have a portfolio, though you are allowed to apply to the School of Art without one, I think you would be at a disadvantage. There are too many Art applicants who DO submit portfolios. My daughter is in Art and she hasn't mentioned anyone who goes to school with her and did not submit a portfolio. I would not want to apply to a school with an in-going disadvantage.

From the FAQ at Wash U's web site:

If I apply to one of the colleges now and change my mind once I enroll, is it hard to switch?

Washington University allows students to change divisions if interests change, once a student has enrolled and met the basic requirements.

The only unique issue with Art is the portfolio. I agree with NU's advice. Go ahead and contact them and prepare a portfolio. Get some advice from your art teachers and counselors about what should be in the portfolio. Good Luck.

The ED decisions are out, so if you are in, just stay where you are, and switch later. If you were deferred, maybe submitting portfolio and changing to Art school will give you a better chance...

Thanks guys,
I minored in art so I did supply an art portfolio (just for supplement), I don't know how that'll work.
But thanks so much for your help!
