Hello, I am wondering how easy it is to change majors at Lafayette. I'm not really talking about changing from something like Electrical Engineering to Civil Engineering, I'm talking about changing majors outside of departments, so to speak. And Justin, I had a tour with you at Lafayette and it was awesome! Thank you so much for your enthusiasm, even though it was something like 10am on a Saturday!

Optisrule,

I'm glad you enjoyed the tour (and recognized how difficult it is for a college student to be enthusiastic so "early" on a Saturday morning).

Even though you are required to formally declare a major by the end of your sophomore year, you can still change majors as many times as you desire. Changing majors is as easy as obtaining a few signatures and submitting a form to the Registrar's Office. You can add/remove a second major or add/remove minors as much as you like, but most importantly, you need to be sure you've fulfilled the requirements for at least one major in four years (unless you're looking to stay a fifth year, that is!).

If you're not thinking of Engineering, I'd recommend taking the entire first year to really explore the curriculum as you work to fulfill our Common Course of Study (CSS can be viewed here: First Year Student Registration - Registrar's Office - Lafayette College). During your second year, consider focusing on one or two areas that most interest you. By the end of sophomore year, you'll hopefully have at least an idea of what classes you should be taking for your declared major(s). If you later decide that you'd like to totally change your major, you just need to be sure you'll be able to take all the necessary courses by graduation. In all honesty, many majors can be completed within a rigorous two years, provided one has the determination to do so.
