Changing mind after submitting ED application

If I were to change my mind immediately after applying ED to a particular school and wanted to apply ED to another school, would that be possible?

bump…

Yes, it’s possible. Your ED school will certainly switch you to RD. All you need to do is get in touch with them. Then you need to persuade your parents and counselor to let you apply ED to the other school. The counselor will need to withdraw the ED agreement with your original school and submit one to your new school and you and your parents will need to sign the form for your new school as well. Good luck with all that, as time is short.

You can withdraw an ED application (either completely or just have it changed to a regular admission application) at any time up until about a week before the ED decisions are released. So you could withdraw the one application by sending an email or letter and then do another.

Have you checked the deadline for the second ED school?

Deadline for the other ED school is midnight tomorrow, so it should work. The main question I have is about the common app. Since I’ve already applied ED it seems to be locked in and won’t let me apply ED to another, saying I can only apply ED to one school. What to do?

Start making a lot of phone calls very quickly.

It’s also possible that if you call the school you want to now apply ED to and tell them that you now want them to be your ED school, they’ll just tell you to get the app in by the deadline, and switch you to ED once the other school releases you. Your GC should also be able to help regarding this, as they likely know which buttons to push to get it to happen.

It seems you have changed the “Early Decision” into a last minute decision. ;)

This probably can’t be fixed, which means (as noted above) that you’ll have to contact your new ED school to arrange to switch your RD app to ED. And there’s nothing wrong with phone calls, but I would strongly suggest that you confirm your intention to apply ED in writing, preferably by email and prior to the ED deadline, so there can be no question later that you made such a request.

You, your parent, and your guidance counselor will also have to execute a new ED agreement and submit that, but that can likely be done after the ED deadline, unless the school insists that you submit it sooner.

Agree-- hurry up and both call AND follow up in writing to your request to change your ED to RD (or EA if that’s an option).

I hope you did not always make last minute decision. To choose a certain school for ED should be thoroughly thought for some time. You are making the situation very complicated that you not only need to change an ED to RD which is possible, but also trying to apply another school ED after you, the counselor, and your parent signed the agreement. I am sure the counselor would not be happy about that.
When it comes to May 1 that you need to make a final decision, I hope you would have a much more thorough consideration on all factors.

This isn’t the first kid I’ve heard of who was torn between two schools, opted for one, and then had a last minute change of heart. It happens, and it’s not the end of the world.

Sometimes there’s one, and only one, first choice school. But many students are more easygoing than that, and would be equally happy at any of several schools. They opt for ED because they’d rather have a decision in December than in April. Doesn’t mean they’re irresponsible.

I can understand if one has 2 top school choices and would love to get into either one. But if you would go through all these trouble to swap after submission, it seems there must be a clear preference between them if one did think it through before submission. There is a point of no return that not everything can be reversed or undone.
Particularly, there is a binding agreement involved, one should really think it through. If one cannot commit to that school, one should not apply ED. It is not like EA that you just want to finish the application process earlier.
